just finished ITR shock/strut/LCA install..... aaaaaaaaaaaaaah
well what a beyotch that was.... my 1994 GSR had some stuck bolts I couldnt move even with a 4 foot breaker bar and soaking in WD40... the bolts for the rear LCA to the spindle/hub.
total PITA.
I ended up sawing off the point on th ebolt and then drilling into the bolts from the threaded end with a 1/4 inch bit. I drilled deep enough to pass thru the nut/tube-thingie they screwed into, then I went a size larger but still made sure there were threads and a little meat left to the bolt... then they unscrewed with a regular ratchet, no breaker bar needed... cool, easy solution but of course I had to stop by the dealer and get two new LCA bolts at $9.90 EACH ? WTF?
-at least I was smart enough to order two endlink-to-LCA bolts before the project (cheap, thanks to Andy at A&Hmotorsport!)
Anyhow, I got the ITR shocks/struts cheap with my ITR Limited Slip Diff, but never got around to finding LCA's to go with them, and finally found some (used ones) for $75 for the pair last week.
Each ITR LCA is about 5+ pounds lighter than the 4 lug teg LCA, interesting.... gotta weight them later to find exact #'s. The LCA's went in easily and then to my surprise the shock swap was a piece of cake (because I already had Sportlines and they do NOT need to be compressed to be switched between shocks/struts). Swapped the sportlines from old-crapola onto the new-and-yummy-ITR stuff and then bolted them right back in... I noticed that the upper rear shock bushings had worn the metal collar to an hourglass shape sort of ... thats not a good thing, so that will get replaced soon... never figured there would be corrosion/wear inside the upper mount.
Took the car out for a joyride and it is a LOT tighter, very stable, and finally the rear end is easy to kick out... I was never able to do so even with my ITR rear sway installed, so now I'm stoked.
I wonder if the new-found-oversteer is a property of newer/tighter shocks/struts or if it is because of the (rumored) "passive steering" provided by the stamped-not-forged ITR LCA's?
any comments?
pics will follow soon....
oh well... time for autoxing!
