Default Exhaust Question

OK, I was wondering why some exhuasts, such as the HKS Sport, say that they are only for the Si, would it work with the Vtec? Also, I am looking to get an exhaust for somewhere under $500, but I've been shopping around, and I don't want a P.O.S. I've seen the Greddy SP for $400. If anyone has any suggestions-please help! -Stefan

Hey man. Before you can get any helpful advise to this question you need to provide us with some key features you are looking for in an exhaust..i.e. loudness, looks, tone, etc.

I just got a Thermal for my 92 Si and I am in the process of installing it as we speak kind of. I am having trouble getting the bolts from the downpipe and cat off. One more to go.

This exhaust isn't the least expensive one out there but it is one of the best sounding ones I have heard (2nd best to Mugen IMO). It is deep, not loud, and made of 100% stainless steel.

The only downsides to this exhaust are the looks (I painted mine black except for the tip) and the price. I got a very good deal but most places charge just over $500 shipped for them.

My other choice was the Apexi World Sport. Nice construction, quiet, nice tone to it, and 100% stainless steel. It is pretty inexpensive too based on some of the other exhasuts out there. I think they are around $400 shipped for them.

Hope this helps.

the reason why there are exhausts for just the Si or just the VTEC is because the cat between the vtec model and the si model are different lengths.
I am almost positive of the fact that the Vtec cat is shorter in length- this would make the shorter si piping pull the muffler back and into a position where it could bang against contol arms or rattle against the bumper.
You would need to test fit the exhaust to your vtec and then depending on the length that needs to be added, get some piping with flanges (or you could weld it) to put the exhaust in the right spot for the hangers and whatnot.

just search the classifieds or ebay if your not concerned about it being brand new. I got my greddy evo out of the classifieds for $200 plus my stock exhaust.

OK. Here's what I'm thinking, tell me what you think of these exhaust systems, I want deep, not here me from a mile away loud though:

1. Tanabe Hyper Medallion-Super Spec
2. GReddy SP
3. Apexi World Sport
4. Thermal R&D

I am also looking at the Evo, but am kinda strapped on cash, rebuilding the 'lude got a little more expensive then I thought.

Also, does anyone know anything about Stromung exhausts? I am really interested in them, my friend told me about them because he has a BMW, and their website says they make them for Hondas also, but I have been unable to contact anyone. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks -Stefan

One more question, I know that all of the 5th gen 'ludes are vtecs, so would a 5th gen Greddy Evo fit on a 4th gen vtec? Just wondering, I was looking on Ebay and only saw the Evo for the 5th gens. -Stefan

yes the 5th gen exhaust will work, with MINOR modification. i bought an used exhaust (for a 5th gen) and put it on my 4th gen. this is what i did......

the first problem i encountered was the bolt pattern for the cat was slighly off. there are several ways to approach this, but i just filed the holes out (exhaust flange). i used a rat tail file and it took me about 30 mins to get it to bolt up.

the second problem was the exhaust stuck out about 2.5 in. past my liking. the 5th gens are slighlty longer if i'm not mistaken. any way to solve this i took the exhaust to a muffler shop and had them cut the excess out of the pipe behind the muffler. you may have to move the muffler's hangers but i didn't. This cost me 20 bucks with tax, and modify the exhaust to fit saved me a few hundred over buying a new one.
