Default LSVTEC or B16

Before I say what i am going to say my net time is very limited so i can't research this. I am in the Gulf right now and I get maybe 10 minutes a week on the net. Now with that being said is it worth making a LSVTEC over a b16? I already have the B16 parts-cams, springs, valves, retainers, intake manifold etc. I want to just put in Type R pistons and rods when i am done (limited budget) Now that the head is ready to be assembled/port polished shoul i just keep the B16 block and work on it or should i invest in a B18 block? I heard there is more than just slapping the head on the block of a B18 when doing an LSVTEc, is that true? Is it worth the extra power I am going to get out of it? Thanks.

Yeah, I'd go LSVTEC. It makes the power (and torque) so much easier...

ls/vtec = junk. go with a gsr. if honda had intended to have a vtec car with an 89mm stroke they would have built it.

One for and one against... I suggest you read C-speedracing.com's site on the process if you want to know what needs to be done.

Myself, I've never been able to figure out why someone would go to the trouble of building an LS/VTEC engine when CRV engines are roughly the same price.

IMHO LS/VTEC and CRVTEC are more trouble than they're worth. Keep in mind I've never owned either, just seen a few around (that have subsequently blown up).

Yeah you right, i wonder why honda never put as turbo, nitrous, intake, nice header ect... on a stock car? That honda would have made it from the factory answer is bull sh*t. Honda doesn't make cars with the enthusiast in mind. They make cars to last 200,000+ miles. Well i would rather have an lsvtec thats way faster then most of the other motors and rebuild it every 100,000 miles because i'm an enthusiast, not the average consumer. If your not willing to punish your motor abit and push the limits then this hobby is not for you. Buy a stock replacement motor for you car because thats what honda intented

Yes, honda made their cars and their motors to last, but with the enthusiast in mind, they also made their motors and cars very buildable. With that said, I have heard both good and bad regarding the LS/Vtec, and the CRVtec. Positive...Ls/Vtec give you nearlly the same specs as the gsr, minus a couple pounds or torque, and a good sum of cash left over. However, they are volital motors, in that they were not made to go together. Hondas Idea of the LS/Vtec was the gsr...but it was built to handle to setup, by boosting the pricetag and beefing the head to match the block. The CRVtec is a knockoff H22, angled more towards the speed inthusiast in my opinion, but its just as faulty as the LS/Vtec. Both of the swaps require head and oil line work, but yes, they do match up. but IMHO there are alot of things that may match that shoudnt always be together...example gorgeous girl/ugly guy...just cuz the parts match doesnt make it right. The Gsr/H22 were built the way they were for a reason, and are priced accordingly...like it has been said, if it were meant to be made that way, it would have been done by Honda. But, everyone has their own opinion, and while the Ls/Vtec and CRVtec may have saved you money and got you props by your homies, make sure someone has a car for you to borrow, or time to give you a ride, but there is alot of down time when that **** breaks....go turbo...or build all motor...if a SOHC non vtec all motor can hit 12's who needs B series??? hahahaha peaceeasy

Thats just something that all b16 owners say that are jealous of the infamous ls-vtec. I own a 88'dx with ls-vtec and let me just say that I to feel like honda makes their motors with 200000+miles in mind. They don think about the aftermarket or the person that loves the aftermarket for their vehicles. Lets let honda make a slower motor that produces more miles and let us the consumer that loves this sport make the motor faster and produce less miles. I have seen 2 ls-vtec's make it past the 130,000 mile mark before rebuild and now I am on about 20000 and still running strong. I say to all of you b16 owners that talk **** about a motor that you are so mechanically declined you dont even know how to build one I WILL SEE YA IN MY REARVIEW.......Your b16 is good but the ls-vtec is better for speed not reliability.

I'm not angry

I just haven't seen a local LS/VTEC or CRVTEC that hasn't blown up before.

That's all. I don't care about r/s ratio, or torque, or this, or that, or if it was meant to be done, or blah, blah, blah, or how you'll smoke me, yadda yadda. I don't really care 'cause I'm not trying to beat you

name one race team that uses the ls/vtec..... ok then , there are none, the lsvtec is more trouble then its worth, and im sure the designers at honda are smarter than every person on here combined, so if the lsvtec was a good idea, they would have tried it in a car , but they didnt.

Go B16

thats a dumb comment. Thats like saying "dont get the jeep, save for the mercades g-wagon. the .8s are alot more, b16s have almost perfect r/s ratio, performs great, and good for boost, get the b16.

There are a few people on this board that will attest to the fact that if built right and put together properly that the LS/VTEC will last you just as long as a B16. Hybridkoop, a member on this board, built an LS/VTEC that ran 12.8 in the 1/4 mile and was also daily driven. He revved that motor to 9K with absolutely no problems. He sold the car and it is still being driven by the kid who bought it. You should post in the All motor forum and try to get some responses before you make up your mind.

Ls/VTEC= WAcked And yea there is more to it.....if its not done right ...its not realiable...you have to have an oil line made for ls vtec....i'd just go with the B16 if your on a budjet....since your gonna have type R pistons and rods just go all motor with the b16..less work less money

Are you speaking from experience? LS/VTEC is crap huh? It doesn't take a whole lot of money to make an LS/VTEC reliable. And so what, you have to make an oil line.....You can buy them from people on this board.

There is a nice dyno plot of a mild LS/VTEC motor. Notice the HP and Torque. If you look at the 1.6 dyno charts there is a B16 that made around 180 hp but still only made 113lbs of torque. If you had something constructive to say it's one thing but to trash something you have no experience with is just ignorant.

The B16 is crap, huh? how does 14.4@98 mph sound, with only I/E on Crap tires? That's what Raene is running. B16's are very finicky... they have to be launched right on the strip to be fast, which is why some people are so dissapointed with their times.

Bottom line: Get a B16 if you want good performance and top end for a reasonable price. If you have more money, get a B18C1. If you have lots of money, and know a LOT about LS/VTECs, you can build one right with aftermarket parts. Me, I would just get the B18C1 if I had that kind of cash.

I don't live my life a quarter mile at a time. And I wouldn't waste another dime on a B16, it disappointed me so much. I should have bought Tein's first.

Depends on what you're using it for.

If I had Teins I would feel pretty gay, seeing as I don't do any open-track racing. So for me it makes sense to spend money on the engine... to a point.

Each to their own.

Yep perfect r/s ratio and 140 to 145whp......or 165 to 170whp with a crappy r/s ratio......
