taking out power steering
I need to know has anybody done this to their 5th gen prelude yet? I'm about to do it to my car and I need to know if anyone had any trouble taking out the whole power steering unit off of their prelude.
I don't know if it was an option on the 5th gen, but you will REALLY want to think about that manual rack. I took p/s off of my 3rd gen, but a manual rack isn't an option. It is a BASTARD to steer. Especially when you're trying to do a sharp u-turn, or just manuvering around a parking lot.
I took the PS off of my 4th gen and I LOVE it! It's all in who you ask... just make sure your tires are inflated correctly, and you can remove the hoses, take a shorter peice and connect the two flanges on the PS rack and that will make it a little easier. Anyway, it's all in what your preferences are...

Depending on how far you want to go into this, you could converte your rack into a true manual rack.
It requires the removal of the entire rack though.
I just pulled it out in between engines, so it was easy. I pulled the rack itself (smooth, shiny metal rod w/teeth for the pinion) and removed the center seal. That seal is responsible for creating fluid pressure in the system when you turn. With it gone, fluid can flow by unhindered. I stuck it all back together, made plugs, filled the rack with ps fluid as a lubricant, and plugged up the holes.
Although I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, I have a feeling it'll work pretty well. I can throw the wheel from lock to lock with my pinky (tie rods obviousely not connected)

I did mine because the h22 I bought didn't come w/ a ps pump. So I figured It'd be more of a hassle to buy a pump, have the fittings adapted, and squeeze it all into my smaller engine compartment than to convert it completely. I probably did save around 50 lbs. plus, I'm kind of a purist. I don't want all of this stuff cluttering my engine compartment that isn't 100% neccessary. So no AC either. The bay looks really clutter free now, and I probably dropped 100 lbs. (well, close to it).
do you gain any power... im assuming you do but for the sacrifice in easy steering, how much harder is it to steer... as in do you have to put some muscle into it taking a turn at 25+ mph?
its great.. once you get the car started then its all good.. its just those dead stops that you have to worry about. but i really like the feel. you can actually feel the road more.
back from the dead (sort of)
How much gain in HP do you get from this? Or does the p/s not draw any power away from the engine?
thanks.
