Default I Need LsVtec Help!!!!

wuz up everyone got a few questions...are any of you having smoke problems? I have the following

B16 head
ctr intake cam
itr exhaust cam
itr pistons
fuel pressure regulator
vafc
adjustable cam gears
sir II ecu (JDM b16 motor i think)

what could be causing the smoke? I have only put about 400 miles and I just changed the oil. it only starts puffing when i give a little gas. I think the smoke is black

I cant remember is black smoke mean oil burning or the mixture is too rich or is white smoke oil burning?

could it just be that the rings havent set yet after 400 miles? I dont really know. Do you think some of the sensors are hooked up wrong? I got code 14 (Idle control valve i think) and 22 which is either Vtec soleniod or Vtec oil pressure(either is ok cause I dont have the solenoid hooked up for a couple hundred more miles) well try to let me know as soon as you can...thanks...later

If it's black, you're probably running rich. Check your fuel mixture. Either your too high or your not burning properly. Has it done it since the beginning or is it recent? You may just need to change your plugs (might not be a bad idea anyway if they weren't new when you put them in). Running rich can mess 'em up kinda quick.

Who put your block together? Sounds like they did a half-*** job. Or maybe its the valve seals. But then of course valve seals wont make the car smoke that much.

actually a freind and i assembled the block and I know FOR SURE that it was done right...every torque sequence was done right and he and I have done a total of 5 blocks with sucessful results so far. Im thinking maybe the A/F mixture is too rich...My air fuel gauge does tend to stay on the rich side for the majority of the time maybe there is too much fuel and not enough spark. Would a fuel rail contribute to that? I have the STR competition rail but the fuel pressure guage reads 35-37 so that should be stock right? well lemme know...later

Fuel rails are a waste of money. . . . . just my opinion on a dress-up item.

Could be getting oil on the spark plugs. That will hamper their abilities to ignite teh mixture. Did you replace the spark plug tube gaskets? They are like 90 cents each, try that.

Blue Smoke = OIL
While SMOKE = Water
Sweet Smelling Smoke = Coolant
Black Smoke = Rich

Here is from another forum:

POSTED:
My car back fires at idle. What can cause this? It has new plugs, timing
is time, most parts are changed any ideas,.

BTW the plugs are the copper ones for SOHC that pepboys sells for the GSR. I have GSR motor, will the plug cause this? During accelration its seems pretty strong,
every now and then it will back fire when i let off gas.
I checked the plugs they look pretty good besides the base has carbon build up but not on the actual plug part.

Car does seem to be running rich also. It gets black **** on back of
car(car is white so it really noticable)And when i get it on hard it
will through out a little bit of BLACK smoke. Motor was rebuilt about
a month ago, doesnt burn oil or anything

I changed the following things to try to solve the rich problem:
o2, plugs, plug wires, injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, map, tps,
pcv cleaned air filter. dist, etc..

I've seen you post about this before and you still haven't figured it out. Well, lemme start here: Do you have any test equipment of your own, or can you get some.....its kinda paramount to troubleshooting.....becuase obviously shot-gunning it hasn't helped you one bit. Now, even though the motor has been freshly re-built, was it broke in proper....we'll just assume yes. With that gone, lets look at your problem, you say your backfiring at idle (and at this point I am assuming that the motor is mechanically sound, alright) and theres black stuff on the back bumper. Well see, I wanna direct you and say, grab a vacuum gauge, and an volt meter, see what the idle vacuum is and the corresponding MAP output voltage. Why am I saying this, well....the MAP has a lot of pull on the Injector Pulse Width.....for further reading, point your browser to http://www.tech2tech.com....its a great HONDA ONLY web site for the professional mechanic, but still has plenty of 'free-information'. Anyway, maybe you have a vacuum leak, causing the MAP to see a lower than normal vacuum signal and increasing its output to the point where you are running rich. Assuming all the sensors and things you have replaced are in working order, and you did it correctly.....then you kinda have to aim towards things that aren't 'sensor-related' in simple terms, meaning, vacuum leaks and things of that sort. But again, you said the motor was freshly rebuilt so then that would mean that most all the gaskets are sealing correctly....so.....I really don't know where to lead you to......do you have a Helms, they certainly help. I see the car listed, I see the motor listed, but what about the year of the engine. Is everything ODB I and wired up correctly....is this problem something that has been happening from the get go....you should include more info. I'm not saying that the plugs are your culprit, and I can't see how they would be......but if the motor is stock, cuz I don't see any mods listed.....then keep it stock.....what I am saying is....eliminate some variables.....which is what you have been doing, but why haven't you done it with the plugs. Troubleshooting over the Internet sometimes is like the blind leading the blind, but I hope this has helped you somewhat in any event.

Laters,
Karl
