Default question for people that have crashed road racing.

what do you do if you road race and crash your car? I mean what if its a daily driven car and you're still paying for it. Will insurance cover it?

Don't race a car that you couldn't afford to drive into a lake.

you sure answered quick Damn that sucks. I would have thought that maybe some would maybe cover it but guess not. I guess I'll scratch off road racing from my list I really wanna try it but not if I'm gonna wreck my car and have to still pay for it afterwards. Yeah we might have to road race my little bros civic then

Maybe I have an altered perspective but I think most people that compete (i.e. timed race for cash/prizes) aren't using their daily drivers. In any case, I'm pretty sure the accepted standard is that as soon as an event is timed and/or deemed "competition" than your insurance company will not cover damages.

HPDE != Road Racing. If you crash your car ``racing'' you are SOL. I know there are some people who are racing in ECHC and are making payments. Those people assume the risks. Now, I would bet that a large majority of people who attend HPDE and ``track events'' do not own their car. They are leasing or still making payments. If you wreck on one of these events, there are a lof variable to know if your particular insurance company will pay. There are many examples of people who have totaled cars at HPDEs and have been paid out. Do a search here and in the ITR forum, I think you will find the info you are looking for.

Some insurance companies will cover non-competition events like driver's eds, but most do not. Call and check to find out. None of them will cover timed events though. Like it was said before, don't put it on the track if you aren't able to pay if you total it....

While I do not agree with it necessarily, I do know of people that have crashed their cars at HPDE's (totaled even) and their insurance covered it. Whether they told the story completely truthfully, I don't know. And maybe the insurance company just happened to cover "instructional driving" events.

So if you're talking about HPDE's, driving on a track under semi-controlled environments where you are not "competing" then by all means, go for it in your daily driver. But there is still risk.

If you mean, all-out, wheel 2 wheel competition... you wouldn't *want* to daily drive your car after it was fully race prepped anyway. (yes, I know there are some that still do)

no I'm not talking about full competition. I'm just talking about open events.

You can get insurance but the "deductable" is often around $5,000. Not bad if you total a BMW, or someone elses BMW.

There are plenty of stories of HPDE cars being covered honestly and truthfully under normal insurance. There are also plenty of cases when they weren't covered. My advice is to drive only as fast as you can afford to. Or look into HPDE-specific insurers (they are out there and a search should turn up a couple.)

"Uh, I hit a dog"

But seriously, I think you're SOL and at the mercy of your insurance company if something happens. That's why I only do Solo events with my car. I can still mess up my car if I ran off course at Solo I Trials, but at least I don't have to worry about another driver screwing up and crashing into me.

Buy a CRX, or better yet, borrow someone else's car.

On top of the deductible, it costs around $5k just to be insured for a weekend as well.

That said, if you have enough to pay for insurance every weekend you should keep your money and just get a new car if you wreck it. Irony at it's finest.

Well, the race car insurance isn't really designed with the club racer in mind. It's aimed more at semi-pro and pro racers in really expensive cars. I know some of the Speed Touring owners require insurance when they rent seats.

The weekend I got the roof cut off my car I "happened" to have insurance at the cost of about $500 for the weekend. The deductible was $2500 but the total damage was about $12k.... so we really got lucky.

I just saw the paperwork last night while cleaning out my files. I'll have to go back and look at it. I WANNA say it was Lloyd's of London but don't quote me on that.

Ivan,
Don't count on insurance to cover your crash. Also, be careful what you ask your agent. They'll drop your *** if they think you're racing.

Like someone else mentioned, don't race what you can't afford to drive off a cliff. You better not have any emotional attachment to your car either. I totalled my last track car and it hurt emotionally more than it did financially. My new racecar is just a car, built for a purpose. That's it. No emotion other than mutual respect

*cough* bullshit! *cough*

you're telling me that if you balled it up, you'd walk away with mutual respect? bah! i'd be balling if that happened. not that i wouldn't enjoy starting over again and doing things better

Comon Ben, I thought you knew me better than that by now. That's exactaly what I'm saying, and if I was lucky enough to walk away (a second time), that's even better.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be pissed to lose my car, but I also keep things in perspective. It's a race car. That's why I bought it, built it, and I know I can be forced to throw it away any day I'm on track with it. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way, but I doubt it.
