ghetto sub setup - audio experts??
hey guys.
so the other day, i had the idea of using the sub/speaker for a computer in my car. it has two wires goin into it. power and the audio input.
so i ran all the wired from the trunk to the front of my car nice and clean. then i connected the power cord with a fuse in the fuse box and grounded it. (btw, the plug that came with the sub said 12V.)
i crimped the audio cable to the back of the two coressponding wires in the harness for the rear speakers (since my car only has two from speakers and no rear speakers, but is wired for rear speakers). i found out which wires to use from a diagram of a harness from best buy. i hooked everything up, and tryed to play a cd on my stock GSR cd player in my 92 civic.
the sub was powered (i knew becuz the LED on the back of the sub lit up.) but no sound came out; not even on my front speakers. but when i unplugged the audio cable from the back of the sub, then sound came out of the front speakers, like normal....
i guess my question is, anyone know what could be the problem? thanx in advance...and sorry about the long *** post.

While I wouldn't recommend what you are doing I think that your problem is in the kind of signal that you are trying to send to the sub. That sub probably needs a line level input on the signal wires since the amp is built in.(RCA cord) It is probably a mono input so all you have to do is figure out which is ground and which is + and then use a line out convertor from your factory speaker leads and run a rca and then splice it into the wires on the sub. This will work if the sub has a crossover built in. if not it will sound like crap. Personally I think it is way more trouble than it is worth man.
hehe...thats what an audio friend of mine said..but he didn't explain it like you did....thats why i went and tried it out!..ha. i'm not a big audio guy...but i wanted some extra...make that any thump in my car for my awesome drum 'n bass and hip hop cds..
but i know what you are talkin' about, so i think i'll try it out...might as well...cuz i ran all the wires through the car, and they're just sittin' there right now! anywho..i'll let anyone interested know the out come of this when i get time to try and make everything work.
thanx again.

I don't think it can be done, and if it doesn I'll sound like ****.
the signal that is comming out from the back speaker are already amplified, and your putting it a other amplifier that is built is your sub.
plus I dough that theres any cross over in that sub, so you'll be getting high mids and lows comming out of your 6" woofer.
that's jsut what I'm thinking
