need help with large buying list
okay.. i have a 1993 v-tec model and due to graduation im getting a large amount of cash ( 5 grand to 8 grand) to put into my car and was wondering what the more car educated members would say to do... was going to do skunk2 springs with tokico illumina struts, greddy header w/ apexi exhaust (not sure which) and an aem cold air intake with aem cam gears and underdrive pulleys (are the unorthodox racing pulleys better?), get the v-tec controller from apexi and was going to hold off on buying any internals at least for the time being, although i might go and buy a new set of cams... any suggestions as to what i should get to put in (for street, i also just bought a set of 17 konig holes on kumho ecsta supra 217s to be put on) for the car and also possible links for cheap internet buying locales would be good to o
thx
thx
well what are your plans for the car? if you plan on going forced induction, the buy a kit and build the engine for that. you should have more than enough money to turbo this car the correct way.
if you plan on staying n/a then i would (5,000) buy the folowing:
1. aem cai
2. greddy headers
3. apexi n1
4. new springs/ retainers
5. cams/cam gears
6. high flow fuel pump
7. aem fuel rail/ reg.
8. hondata s200
i'm guessing that would put you in the 5,000 range with labor and everything, it might be a little more or less but you get the idea. any way let everyone know what exactly you want to do with the car so we can make better suggestions
( i.e forced induction, daily driver, autox, drag racing, etc.)

well as harsh and everything as this seems i wasnt planning on going forced induction just yet, im getting 10,000 in inheritance soon in which i was goin to use to have my engine sent away and then rebuilt and turbo'd... get the hondata s2000 over the apexi vtec controller?
put it in a money market account and watch the money grow.
Then when you have $20,000 in a few years and are old enough and have the experience to know how to drive a fast car WELL... THEN modify it using $10,000.
Don't make the same mistake most all of us made. Having money set aside is the one thing I wished I had done from the very beggining.

I'll agree. the only thing that is saving me right now is that I DIDN'T mod my car like I really wanted to. stuff happens and if you have a wreck or something that money is just gone. I'd save it. I'm having to pay for college right now and it's not fun... (dang it I'm sounding like an old lady lol)
maybe spend 2 grand and bank the rest.. come on.. i bet having fun is what its all about.. I dont think being 17 and waiting for money to grow is too much fun.. and so i bet if you do the minor mods (Intake/Header/ Pulleys/Exhaust) you will gain decent hp but not blow all your money away.. I bet for 2k $ you will be able to buy what you wish.. but not anything extravagant.. and then follow the advice of the guys who told you to mod the hell out of the car when you get double your moneys worth....
well basically the thing was either get a new car thats 20ish thousand or keep the prelude and 'do it up' as i had wanted to do, so im going to replace the suspension for performance reasons and also due to cracked stock coil springs etc various other things to 'fix up' and also 'supe up' the car ... sending the engine to be rebuilt, going to try to make the car last thru 6 years of college (going for doctor of pharmacy), have full scholarship anddddddd not much else to spend all my money on except for a car, dont drink or do drugs so i kind of have a lot of money and stuff.. so instead of giving me investment opinions, hook me up with some information on what to buy, dammit

I know that's not the answer you're looking for dude, but it's the right one.
It's contrary to what most of us, me included, are actually doing, so yes I'm being a hypocrite, yet still giving good advice. But you're 17, and I know that if I was 17 (I actually don't really remember being 17, but I digress) with middle-4 digits to spend I wouldn't want to hear any of this either, so...
Now that that's out of the way, if you simply MUST spend the $$$, then turbo it (buy Sam's turbo kit). If I had $8000 to throw away right now that's what I'd do.
If you really want to stay N/A for now then yeah, I'd do the i/h/e thing, then maybe a lightweight flywheel, P&P the IM/head, port the tb, get some cams/springs/retainers/valves and a 65 shot. That's what I'm in the process of doing now, and though it still won't be boosted, it should be fun.

amen to that.... modifying a car is just a money pit, save your money you got time to do some of this stuff later on.... just spend a few dollars on i/h/e and put the rest in a mutual fund or some like that.

do what you need to do and learn from your own mistakes. you can't always go on the experiences of others because everyone is always in a different situation.
however, spending anywhere near $8000 for a 93 Prelude would have to be questioned.
first, seriously consider how long you plan to keep the car and what your goals are. the prelude is a great base to work from. simple modifications make a world of difference.

We will see you in a few years when you are broke, have a car in the shop some where waiting for money to get it fixed, and working two jobs while going to school to get out of debt.....
Always keep a nest egg... cause you know what? you are going to blow up your car... almost every one here that has had work done on their car gets a heavy foot, loses IQ points and floats a valve, or the tensioner fails, or something...
now we are all waiting to get more money to fix the mistake that was made the first 3 times.

Good to see some honest posts about, well, life. There are things more important than cars, and this is one of them. After you've spent all that money, and you lose your job (and you WILL lose your job eventually,) how long can you survive (and not live at home.)
aww man ..
now i'm jealous.
i'm 17 and just graduated too! all i got was 20 dollars and a pair of new shoes!!
oh well. j/k
hell.. if i had 8K right now, i'd save 2K for emergencies (like i did from my old minimum wage job), spend some of it on school, and then spend the rest to mod a car (if i had a car).

Ok, no more life advice dude.
I think I understand somewhat, when I was 17 I think I considered 25 ancient and I figured I'd probably be dead by the time I was 30, so...You've got my list already, but I'm down for that PayPal option also.

On a side note: Sorry dude, but from what I understand pharmacists on this coast don't come out of school making $80k/year. I have 2 friends that are pharmacists here in VA (a guy & his wife), they both graduated from VCU about 6 years ago and neither makes more than $60k...that ain't chump change, but $20k is a BIG difference...

do they have BS in pharmacy or a Pharm.D. (doctor of pharmacy) ? that might be why
few years ago they mandated the change from the bs to a pharm.d

have a friend who graduated from the pharmacy school at rutgers university in new jersey. from what i understand it's one of the top pharmacy programs in the country.
pharmacists definitely don't start at 80k per year, at least this is what my friend told me 3-4 years ago when we all graduated college.

those who think they are invincible are the first ones to fall.
you have what 6 years of college to get your degree? do you know what can happen to your car in 6 years? You can wreck it, the engine could blow up, something back could just happen to it.. then what money are you going to use to fix it? NONE, cause you spent it all on the first go around. You already said you wont have a job, cause you have a full scholarship.
So I am telling you, if you dont plan... bad things will happen...
