Type R or MR2 - which is better?
My friend just got a 98 MR2, and he recons it's faster than my Type R. Since he lives miles away a race is not possible at this time. What do you lot reon? I think he's talking BS.
Your best bet is to goto http://www.motortrend.com or http://www.caranddriver.com or http://www.roadandtrack.com and look at the specs.
Turbo MR2 or Normal MR2...........Turbo MR2 and your done! Those things are light as hell and have 240 around 240 hp stock.
There's several different engines that come with MR2s....if it's turbo or supercharged, I think it'll take ya. MR2s tend to kick *** at autocross....but then, they need a trailer to carry their race tires
Again, it'll be close...the MR2 is a very nimble little RWD mid-engined sports car, no compromises. Driver skill will be the deciding factor.

Remember that this guy is not in the US. The '98 Mr2 is quite an awesome car, and will likely destroy the ITR in all performance categories. But, it is much harder to drive the mr2 to its potential than the ITR. So, a with a good driver in both cars, the mr2 should not have trouble lapping faster. But, with just decent drivers in both cars, the ITR should be faster, since it is MUCH easier (and safer) to drive near its limits.
BTW, I used to have a '91 mr2 turbo. Miss that car. Wanna see a good condition mr2? Go to http://www.geocities.com/yell00itr/mr2.html Ran mid 13s with barely any mods on crappy street tires and a bad 60 ft!

WHAT!?! MRs2 can't beat a Type R!!! You guys are insane for even thinking that...HAhAha
For what it's worth I beat the newest gen mr2 turbo, that came to the US, by about 2 car lengths( 200hp & 200 Tq)...Raced him twice, same results...Then again maybe he was just a crap *** driver...that or it was NA and he had a tweeter outside his car making blow off valve sounds...pssss

youre dreaming dude...MR2 GT Turbos are so much faster! 5.4 sec in 0-100km and 13 sec 1/4s!! ITR is no competition...
EminemGSR: Had to sell the Mister 2 because it was simply to unpractical. Yep, needed a 4 door!
So, we picked up a 2001 BMW 330i (5sp, of course!).
I really miss that mr2. With a little more practice and a couple other key mods I'm positive I could have been in the 12s on street tires. And I am not a drag racer either. I would have loved to take the mr2 to an autocross but was a little scared of taking it to the road courses!
Chaze*R: Mr2s need lots of maintenance as far as the ignition system is concerned. It isnt uncommon to see 50hp variances car to car because of old ignition components versus brand new ones.
In all, a very good car, but it required lots of TLC and time to keep running great. In fact, when I had it I had no time for the R and neglected it quite a bit.

My good friend has a 91 turbo MR2 with duel Greddy exhaust, and I had no problems pulling him with my R with just a Mugen CIA. My friends Vtec Prelude (94) used to smoke him also. Although it was very close.

Your on crack! 0-60 is 6.2 for a turbocharged MR2. But I'm not sure what year it turned into the spyder. That thing is a slow girly car.

Stock USDM MR2 and ITR is very close, it can really go either way. JDM MR2 and it's game over....
Well I love the turbo MR2's but two bad things. One as Anil said, it does require some TLC especially now that they are all at least 6 years old. Two, they are hard to work on. That being said, I'm a HUGE fan of the 3S-GTE powerplant and the potential and parts availability is limiitless. With upgraded turbo and the bolt ons 12's are no problem. It is a VERY fast car and incredible handling although it is pretty scary one the road race track if you're not careful from what I understand.
Stock for stock (or close to it), the USDM Mr2 is barely faster than the ITR. It obviously launches MUCH more consistently though. Put $1000 worth of mods on either car, and the mr2 will be MUCH faster (as with just about any Turbo vs. NA argument).
Again, the mr2s are VERY temperamental and really need to have their ignition system in top notch condition (I used to change sparkplugs ever 3k miles!) to work their best.
And yes, the internet is global. Us americans need to realize that other countries get different cars than us, many times better. The JDM Mr2 in question has 245hp and will destroy a stock Type R, all else being equal. The Type R is a great car but there are plenty of cars out there that can outperform it. Just keep things in perspective...

Remember we have guys here from all over the world. While our North American turbos only had 200 HP, they reached a peak of 245 HP elsewhere during it's long production run. I have the Best Motoring video where a JDM MR2 just destroys a JDM ITR in the 1/4 mile.

Yup...aside frome getting a turbo theres very little you can do to get an ITR to outrun an MR2 on the 1/4...I don't know what kind of crap they sell in the states but the JDM MR2 gt turbo is still of the 1/4 here!!!
Well...here the MR2 GT Turbo can outrun some Ferraris
