i live in Kearny, NJ.. near newark for those NJ people.. anyways.. the prices here are sky high for car's... i am lookin to buy a 97' Hatchback at a dealer... its a dx, 5spd, 49k miles, Excelent Condition, Clear title, indiglo and clear lights, i test drived it and it runs very smooth and 60 day warranty.. for 9,900 i dropped it down to 8,900 dollars Cash.... what do u poeple think 1.6L 106 hp I4 is it worth it? and does anyone know if i can install a tach on it?

 

thats ALOT!!! $8900 go to the partstrader.com they have some there for alot cheaper... theres plenty from where u are that is way cheaper and look probably better that one for 8900...

First of all let me say that I own a '97 DX HB and it's a very reliable car. I have 138k mi. on mine and the engine runs almost like new. It doesn't burn any oil (it starts burning some if I don't change the oil after 4,000 but it's very very little) and I 've done nothing to the car but change the timing belt, 1 tune-up and 1 front brake job. That's it!
Now my car was in a very bad accident when it had 50k mi. on it, with mostly suspension damage where they replaced the lower control arms (but not the springs or shocks or anything else). Me and 11 other cars drove over a truck's axle on the highway doing 65mph. I was airborn with airbags in my face. The impact of the wheels was severe driving over that 5-7" axle and the landing wasn't good either. Anyway, it seems that the shocks are going now and I 'm getting a few rattles. I 'm actually glad I didn't sell the car when I wanted to 3yrs ago when the accident happened. It waited until now to develop the rattles and stuff. I know it's all from that accident and I thought all that would 've happened sooner but it didn't. The car always pulled a little after the accident and wheel alignments didn't do any good but it wasn't bad at all. Anyway, having said that about the accident, this car has been very good to me. No repairs, just a tune-up and brakes along with timing belt. It's a very low maintenance car, and with some larger wheels and better tires it's actually fun to drive (I have Borbet Type-T 14x6" wheels with 195-60 Yokohama AVS Intermediate VR tires, or Dunlop D60-A2 195-60s, great tires both of them).
Now, that price seems a little high. Go to kelleybluebook.com and look up the retail & trade-in prices, then offer the dealer a price closer to trade-in or right in the middle between the two. I can't see that car worth more than $8K. I would offer him $7900. I paid $12.5K for mine new in '97 and that included A/C. Sticker was $13.6K but I talked them down. Good luck, it's a very good reliable car, easy to work and mod. It's also weighs under 2300lbs because it doesn't have Power Steering, and not having P/S means more power to the wheels too. Mine weighed 2258lbs before the A/C. I figure 2300lbs max with the A/C.

 

i agree that price is high. buy one from an owner cheap and then swap out the engine!
