FATT 6/20
Since rain is being forecast, I was wondering, should I use the Kumhos (the only tread remaining is the two main grooved/channels), or my really crappy street tires... Wish I still had the AVS intermediates on my car.
I've never been at Summit in the wet, and don't know if any pools develope.
and I'm a wuss, the last few weekends, I've realized I hate changing wheels in the rain.

If it's just damp, run the Kumhos. If anything is falling from the sky, streets. Summit is extremely slippery in the wet, and requires some big ***** to drive well in the rain.

Warren speaks the truth.
i have seen many many cars balled up at summit in the rain. especially turns 3, 4, 8, 10. it takes skill and bravery to drive summit quick in the rain.
the rain will make for some good racing, though!
see you there.

Probably use the Kumhos. I have driven a FATT in the pooring ran. The instructtors should manage to keep students under control.
I remember deep standing water coming out of the Carousel (sp?), and watching a friend in a Del Sol VTEC spin (more than once).
I think I was on BFG R1s in my first gen. CRX, which stuck pretty well.

Just remember that you'll be driving in the rain. Streets will probably be fine. If you remember that you're in the wet ( you're open windows and constantly wet feeling will remind you), then you will be driving aware - and that means you will learn how to handle a car on a wet pavement ( hopefully that means not quite as fest).

I'm with you... as much as I probably need to learn to drive a track in the rain, I simply fear wrecking too much... sure it forces more car control on you, but there isn't much room for forgiveness, and I'm sure like you, I can't afford a mistake like that.
I ran there in the rain on falkens - no problems except the carousel does, and will puddle up. Given the rain we got tonite, i'm sure it will be waiting for you - just dont drive through the big puddles and you'll be fine. Oh yeah, sideways in T1 and T5 are fun!

Fear keeps you honest. You have to be prepared for the possibility of balling the car and walking away though.

I wound up leaving the Kumhos in the paddock, but that was fine. The street tires were pretty loose and very forgiving. It was probably a good thing given the amount of rain we had on Friday and the very little tread I have left on the V700s.
FEAR, yes I had it and want to get rid of it! I felt like I was tip-toeing during the whole morning session (1st 2 sessions), and part of the 3rd and 4th too.
It wasn't until the last session as the track started drying up that I could feel comfortable mashing the pedal to the floor.
I'm still trying to sort the whole thing out in my head... slippery, loose and fun? I'm very humbled at the moment and even though I was given some compliments on keeping on top of the car as it got loose, I know I wasn't at the limit, even in the rain. The limit seems very nebulous (sp?) in the rain.
Thanks for the input about which tires to use. I finally wound up asking a few guys at the track what to do. Since there was heavy pooling in various areas, they recommneded the street tires.
