I believe there are two differnent "classes" one with studs, one without. Interestingly enough, the one without studs, you can buy these tires that have industrial diamonds embeded in the rubber. I guess that's still considered unstudded.

We've got an ice racing series here in Ontario too. It's a very cost effective way to race door to door. You can usually pick up a built ice racer for 500 - 2000 bucks or build your own out of a total beater for cheap. All the cars racing are beaters too. Entry fees are around $100 and you only need a basic license to compete (requirements are $50 and a heartbeat). I've been toying with entering, especially since some people offer rentals. hehe.
The Trophee Andros that Mika (and a bazillion other ex-F1 guys) run is a long way from beaters. Take a peeky at http://www.valthorens.com/gb/gb-andros.asp
The cars make WRC hardware look tame by comparison. They ran in Canada this year, I think?
