1988 S?
Reading through the posts/topics on this forum, I've gathered that most if not all of you have either 4th or 5th gen ludes, so I don't know if you will be able to help, but I'm looking to drop a H22 or H23 engine in my 1988 S model and I have a few questions.
I know what you're saying, sell it and get an Si. Can't really do that with out losing about a thousand bucks. I don't really have that to lose, and anyway I like the challenge. I've read that it's not impossible to drop a H22 or an H23 in to a 1988 lude, as long as you use a basic kit. What I haven't read that it's not impossible to drop it in an S model as opposed to an Si. I know I'll have to get a new ECU, but is there anything else that I would need? New fuel pump? New fuel regulator? Where do I read about those and how to install them?
Where I can get a kit that will allow me to bolt the engine in? Where is the best place to look for/purchase an H22 or H23 engine? Can I piece together one from parts ( buy the block, the pistons, the rods, etc.) over a period of time? Has anyone done something like this?
Also, can someone tell me where my ECU is, and how it works in relation to the engine? (Other than the obvious, "It regulates how the engine preforms at any give time") Or even a place that I can read about it?
I am a newbie at this, but hell, where else do you start.
Thanks for the help.

well, I have never personally dealt with the older preludes....but lets look at the obvious:
1. If you do a motor swap...you WILL need the complete changeoverincluding the tranny, the h-series trannies and the older b-series trannies are not compatable.
2. I am guessing that you will need a motor mount kit, custom axles, and custom shift linkage.
3. I am pretty sure that your prelude is carburated, is this correct? Then you will have to do some pretty extensive wiring.....not to mention an ECU.
Dood, there will be alot of $$$ spent.....I am sure it would be cheaper to keep the 3rd gen, and buy a used 92-93 SI...really

Engine, tranny, ecu,shift linkage,place racing mounts,engine harness,ecu harness,and axles
Thats what you need.
Fuel pump is optional..
As far as your suspension...get 5th gen coilovers (you only need the fronts) also replace your bushings if you want to.
One more thing....kiss your header goodbye....i wish i had pics to show.

in this case the fuel pump is not optional. the carbureted model fuel pump will not work with fuel injection. you will need to get a fuel pump from the si, or an aftermarket adjustable fuel pump. you will also need to change the fuel lines. the feed line and the return line are smaller in a carbed model. you will need to replace both with larger lines. the fuel filters are also probably different. you should change those as well. then you should be able to do the changeover.
