Question for poeple who change their own oil...
If you don't have a jack or equipment to lift your car do you just drive the two front tires up the curb? Or maybe the two wheels on one side on the curb? Which way is better? Is it safe to do it this way?
Thanks,
Thanks,
be safe and spend the $32 bucks for a real floorjack + jackstands from Target. A friend almost died when a car (that was up on a bumper jack) fell not 15 seconds after he pulled his head out from under the car.
I use Rhino ramps. Just slide them in front of your front wheels and drive up onto them. They're like $30. They'll pay for themselves after a few oil changes. Plus, you know you're putting in quality oil and filter, unlike your typical lube shop.

Yea just get a jack and some jackstands, they're not that expensive.... trust me you'll find many uses for them other than changing oil. Sears usually has a set (jack + stands) on sale for fairly cheap.
Like others said, never EVER get under a car that's not on jackstands or ramps (or a good solid curb, LOL). It's just not worth risking your own life
And yes, changing your own oil is always the way to go

but that doesn't guarantee that some dude might run your legs over when your using the curb while you're under the car.
trust me, buy a jack and some stands from autozone or kragen... doesn't cost much. it'll save your pair of legs

The curb method is safe, but incredibly ghetto
I prefer ramps for oil changes. Usually they can be had fairly cheap, and it's quicker than jacking up the car.
Edit: Yeah, you would have to watch out for people running over your legs....

i use rhyno ramps. but my car is still too low to drive up on them so i have to drive onto some 2x6's first. or bricks whichever i can find the fastest. but i definately change it myself. i need to go buy my jack and jackstands cause i think my friend is getting pretty tired of me stopping by and borrowing his every weekend.
I think what he meant by the jiffy lube guy is while he's changing your oil hell mess up something else on your ar so that youll have to come back to them to get it fixed. While the shop denies they did it and the mechanic will probably laugh thats why most of the time it pays to just do your own **** to the fullest extent that way if you screw up you can be like well at least it was all on me.

It just that they got sues so often because they sometime reuse the filter or use the old oil, sometime you paid for something they give you something cheaper. I am not saying that each and every one of J. Lube is fishy, but some guy(in H-T) used to work for J-lube admit that's what they do
and you bet, I am not making this up..ask around prolly there's people knows the truth too.
being a jackass myself i just wont let anyone work on my car without me being there. that's why I DIY most of the stuff, it's cheaper and you are sure to get what you pay for.
I already have a jack and jackstands, that's what i use for oil change, and yeah..the ghetto bucket for the dirty oil.

where do yall usually jack the car up from and place the stands at? i usually put the jack under the main brace under the ingine next to the header right at the loop to get it up and place the stands at the jacking points behind the front wheels. is this the best way to do it?

thats what i do if i need both of the front wheels off the ground at once. but i usually jack it from the side from the front jack point high enough where i can get a stand under the back jacking point. then i put the jackstand in the front under one of the suspension bushing points.

How low is your car? I was think about getting some ramps to make it faster than a jack and jackstands but I don't want to buy a set of ramps and my car be to low. I have Eibach Pro-Kit springs, so thats about a 1.2" drop. Is this to low to use ramps without using wood or bricks to start off? Thanks
