If I was making the 2004 NHRA rules......
here is what I would do to improve the classes, mainly the sport FWD/RWD classes. The first thing I would do is I would get rid of these two classes.I'd make these two classes to replace them..
1.. A FWD turbo 4 class based on all steel/glass/full exhaust bodies with restriction on wieght, not interior pieces and fuel cells allowed.Slicks and Skinnies Allowed.I put it at 2500lbs/with driver for dohc 2200lbs/with driver for sohc..and i would make it a championship with some kind of decent payout---$1000 range would be nice
2.. The other class would be a fwd street class following the 03 sport fwd rules but using drag radials instead of slicks ,i put min wieghts at 2100lbs/with driver for N/A, 2400lbs/with driver for 1 power adder with a payout of $500 but this class would not be a championship............
Forget about another RWD class like sport rwd(which has a very low turnout this year anyhow)..for import cars they(rx7,supras,300Zs) are big bucks, limited and will never show in mass(esp as the years pass)..and just look at the name of the series,,its Sport Compact Series...last time I checked Supras/Rx7s/300Zs were not sport compacts and besides they have other classes the they can run in and have been dominating for years such as Modified. These are high end/$$$ cars and they basically should stay in the higher classes.......so what you guys think..

I think the total weight should be with the driver in the car, why should it matter how much the driver weights. If you want to make a class where all motor cars and FI cars run in the same class the weight break has to be more. I don't think 300lbs if enough for all motor to keep up but drag radials my even make it closer. But I do like the idea of the first class.
lol good question...I think I made a mistake on that one ..I was kinda rushing it cause I was at work...I'll change it...thanks
BTW..out of my own curiousity, why did you vote not to change it?

I didn't vote, unless I hit a stray key by accident. Figure any votes on my part will be a "conflict of interests".
So I choose to stay out of any voting. If there's a vote with my name on it, it's a mistake.
This poll is for "you guys". I'm just interested in the results. Thanks again, everyone, for all the input. It IS being read.

I agree for the most part except for the championship series part. I doubt people will travel and no large sponsors will sponsor the series. I do not see that happening.

People will travel.People are traveling now for sport fwd and it doesnt have a championship and besides the temptation of championship points will make them travel...

hmm
I dont think I get this one...Its not a series, its just two classes within a series...

i think that u should just leave the rules the way they are...not tryin to hate on ur ideas or anything..but it seems like u want it to be for more streetable cars....i think they should make it more and more for pro cars becuz isnt that the whole point?...is to make the import racin as big as it can get....so imports can be on top fuel level in like 5-10 years.

that's only true of the second class, which is the current sport fwd, only diff is the use of drag radials and the weights get N/As into it.

Nope, that's not the point of these classes..I'll leave that to the FWD and RWD Pro Classes.

I like the idea of a weigh with driver, and no rules on interior peices, just total weight, and fuel cells of course
. i thinkthey still need a RWD class, bt i still think the fwd class can be altered fro the better.
. i thinkthey still need a RWD class, bt i still think the fwd class can be altered fro the better.
I think most of the rwd class is gone because there is no street tire championship. I think most of them think a class with out points for 500.00 is beneath them.
As far as your first class a 2500 minimum weight is nice but, with no interior no honda is gonna make weight. Dont you think a 300 pound weight break for sohc is kinda biased towards your power plant of choice? I mean if a sohc can make 450 and a dohc can make 500, doesnt the sohc have a advantage at that weight? Most hatches with sohc cam weigh at most a 100 pounds less if that. Why have 2 classes that catter to the same type of car, but different tire? If you want na and turbo to have close racing run brackets, why would a turbo guy run in a class that would potentially allow a na car to run a way from him? Hell why not let sport fwd run in all motor, 1500 pound na car on methanol, vs a 2500 pound street car making 300 hp more? **** why dont we just run against bullish in bracket racing, why should they have an advantage after all the time and money the have invested? Just let some guy in a tercel that dials in @ 18 seconds, send them home, when they dial in @ 6.70 and wait 11 seconds to chace him down.. Well that may be an over exaggeration... but there seems to be a big tendency for people not to read a rule book and then complain when there car does not fit in a particular class, or is not competitive. Still does not answer the question why are there cars that can run sport fwd , and they run brackets? Jason

Yes,fuel cells.I forgot to add that one.I'll do it now. You know,as it is now with sport fwd,I dont see why someone cant race because he has a fuel cell.I dont see any performance advantaged of having one but i do see a car being safer with one mounted correctly, all enclosed and vented right.......but it cant be mounted up front under the hood somewhere for weight ballast.

Wow..jason you asked to many questions in one shot..i dont have the time to anwser all cause im at work,i have to make it quick and take only one.....1st off very very few Ds have ever made 450hp,I only know of one doing so over the years..and Bs only making 500hp?? come on..500hp for B aint a big deal, they're are many many making that and alot more..there is at least a 100hp diff between the two engines..a good 1/2 sec or more in the 1/4...Here goes a good example of two cars that raced and are legal for the same class(NOPI Turbo 4)..take your littlebluecrx B which ran 9.8s and pit it against the fastest current running D,which is Zex Man(matt patrick). His turbo CRX D runs a 10.8 with nitrous on it too!! and its at least a good 100lbs ligher than your car...hell now that i think about it..maybe 300lbs aint enuff.Check this out...Your 9.8 with full interior,steel/windows etc was quicker than the fastest D ever which was Jason Whitfield. He ran a 10.2 and his crx had a 1-piece fiberglass front end, lexan all around and totally gutting interior..

sorry to be off-topic, but can we have a vote about Jim Skelly being a bad ****. I never would have expected them (NHRA) to be so proactive on this board.
I personally like NDRA cause they dont bitch about interior pieces and they do allow fuel cells in turbo 4. I'm getting my car ready soon to run all the nopi events. i think i can be pretty competitive at nopi. the only problem with nopi is you have to run awd cars and some of them run a consistent 10.5.

The closest NDRA to you looks like maple grove. You can find the schedule on nopi.com. Are you still coming down to MIR this weekend or you can't?

they really do need a class thats between hotrod and street class for us guys that have gutted our cars to far or put fuel cells. I know it wont happen and there is as many reasons not to have it as there is to have it. I just wish there was an anythign goes class with a weight min of like 2300. only thing you must have is full glass,no wheelie bars,1pc front, fiberglass doors etc.. anythign that is really race only. I bet we could see some nice 9 sec passes on a budget in that class.
Stop making me re think my comments
, But 300 pounds is a lot of weight. I think there should be a difference, but do not agree on how much. But I still do not know what is so hard about having interior? Street class right? Jason

I like this thread, hehe... I think there should be many changes, but who the hell am i? They made the rules for a reason, to keep everything fair. I too think that a minumum weight limit should be the only rule weightwise, but of not, then we cant say we didnt know the rules... BUT, no matter what anyone says, i still think the fuel cell rule is rediculous.
the fuel cell rule sucks. I chose a fuel cell only to simplify my fuel system and make it easier to monitor gas not to lose weight. and if i am over weight min who cares right. nopi turbo 4 you can run feul cell. i really like the way nopi acomodates the small guys not just the big dogs!!!

I am not following you on this one... nopi 2003 rules states that in turbo 4 you must run have door panels, dash, headliner and carpet, the passenger seat and back seat and back seat plus all trim back of drivers seat can be removed. In the fuel section it states stock fuel tanks only. "NO" fuel cells allowed. Cars found missing required components shall be disqualified! Is there an adendum to their rules that I need to know about ?
Also.. on the awd cars.. they have to use dot approved radials in t/4.. I have yet to see on an awd run a 10.5 in t/4 but I could be wrong.. Aren't they usually running in the pro street class?

yeah, you need door panels and dash but honestly you can get away w/o the carpet and headliner. they told us you dont need the 2nd seat we had in there also. i spoke to the event coordinator and he said fuel cells are allowed in turbo 4 now also. yeah, it woul dbe nice if they updated the rules cause i would never attempted to run that class if i had to change my fuel system. let me put i to yo uthis way. they are very very leanient with the rules. I wouldnt show up with a full race car but if you are missing 1 thing or 2 small things they will let you slide.
I guess you havent seen the cars from automotosports (AMS). they have their **** together big time. i have never seen so many awd dsms run a full event ever. none of them broke and 2 of them ran 10's all day and 1 ran 10.2@144. the lancer that ran 10.2 was in pro class but the other 2 10 sec dsm's were in turbo 4. it just so happened that frank from sfp busted out a 10.7@142 to beat out the dsm that ran 10.5 all day in the finals. the dsm missed agear and that was all she wrote!!
