fastbrakes wilwood question, making funny noises
first off, mods i'm sorry for posting a tech type question here, but i'm doing so because i know quite a few of the RR guys that use this same setup. feel free to move if u ****'s feel it's necessary.
i ordered the civic fast brakes kit a while back (11" rotors and wilwood 4 piston calipers) and have been running it for a while now. a couple of weeks ago, i noticed that when i apply the brakes now, it's started to make this "creaking" noise. i decieded to see if i could find what it was coming from, so i had a friend step on the brake pedal a couple of times while i got down beside the wheel and listened to see where it was coming from. when he did this... i noticed that the caliper was actually flexing outward towards the spokes of the wheel. i then noticed marks where the wheel spokes have actually made contact with the caliper, under only hard braking i guess. i don't think the calipers are supposed to flex like that. anyone else ever had any trouble with this? or any diagnosis?
i'm waiting to hear back from brian at fastbrakes on some torque specs to make sure that's not what it is.

hi hunter.
don't know about the creaking, but a friend of mine with a VR-6 Corrado upgraded to a big brake Wilwood kit. he had contact between his rims and his calipers during heavy braking at a track event. out came the file, and he very carefully filed away the offending area on the caliper. no more problem after that.....

I'm told my kit also has the same issues. I loaned mine out to a friend who had the 11" fastbrakes kit and was interested in trying out my 4piston calipers, as my car is far from running.
He IM'd me the next day telling me the calipers were 'bending' and I just dismissed it for now, as I was heading out on vacation. I'll bother him later and see if he can give me some ideas as to how to fix this (if he did), or more details as to what is the weak point.
I have some instructions that I found on the web w/ torque specs that are out in my car. I'll try to take a break (not a pun
) from work and go get them if needed.

that would be great if u could ask him what the problem was. and are those specs for wilwood calipers?

I think the person who made this is on HT. When I was tying in to url it 'autofilled' the name to the vegasracing video posted a while back. I'll keep trying to get ahold of my friend who installed my brakes on his car for his input too.
As you can see theres not a lot of room for flex on most rims:

That cm gap makes the gap between Hunter's wheel and caliper look like a mile. I'd suggest getting a 10mm spacer to slack in there and you should be good to go.

the "Creaking" is pretty normal...
sounds more like squealing? If so, i saw an integra the other day with the same kit and whenever he braked, the same squeal i have on my CRX.
I think it's just how the calipers are with reference to the pad and how they are installed. It might be the retaining clip that makes the noise.
IF i were you, i'd just unbolt the wheel to make sure nothing is hitting.

I dont think the concern is so much the sound, as it is the caliper actually bending and flexing outward during braking . Its a bit unerving and I'm not sure if its a common defect, or whether this is just a 'bonus feature' of the calipers.

Is your rotor running through your caliper in the center of the caliper? Did you space the caliper out from the knuckle properly so the rotor is centered in the caliper? Have you checked that you don't have a frozen piston? Are your pads worn more on one side i.e., inside or out side? Sounds like the caliper pistons are not putting close to equal pressure from both sides on the rotor.

that car needs to be sold. its your brakes telling you that they dont like you anymore cuz you have the other integra. burn it.
or just give it to me.
maybe a bigger spacer.. how bout 20mm? i would still hang out with you.

exactly, i don't care about the noise, it's the flexing that i'm bothered with.

I second the 20mm spacer.
Take the caliper off and clean the crapola out of it and lube up the slider pins.

extended studs are for stunnaz!!!!!!
but seriously. i hear those skunk2 studs have probs. but i have seen them and they look nice.
BTW, can he really run 20mm spacer? wouldnt that be risky and snap?

a spot weld to keep them from spinning would suffice , or get OEM extended wheel studs and call it a day...

a way to prove this is to check the wheel...look for damage .shrugs.

I've seen this before. "Warpwood" calipers are the bottom of the barrel. YOu get what you pay for.
edit: almost all calipers flex some, and this does need to be kept in mind when selecting wheels or spacers to clear the brakes, but wilwood becomes extreme in the amount of distance they flex. The calipers, also, do not reflex back into their original position.
