Default a friend of mine wants some opinions

he has about 3500 to spend on a car and motor, so i was thinking a crx or a 88-91 hatch, and getting an ex motor for it and running a 65 shot, (probably dry due to funding) i have a b16 in my crx and it cost me around 3200 to get it in to the car and running, that total is also without the cars price, he has to buy a car, any opinions or ideas on what he could do, he wants to be lookin at low to mid 14s pretty easily.

find a car that somebody did and buy it. That will be the best way to go. A dohc zc with a zc/si hybrid tranny,chipped ecu,IHE and a 50 shot will get you in the 14's or just buy my car

If 14's is all he's going for, just get a ZC. I'll get a lot of crap for saying this, but B series engines aren't all that they're cracked up to be. But they are capable to be great. You can build a freakin a B16 just with the block. Parts galore for that thing. But if 14 seconds is all you're looking for, ZC's are the best way to go. Relatively cheap, same potential, but harder to find parts for.

By the way, I can find a complete B16 swap out of an SiR for $1100. Thats ECU, wiring, axles, everything.

Also, I would go with the CRX personally. CRX's are just more fun. Plus, when it comes to the 88-91 CRX's and Civic hatches, CRX parts are just more plentiful (suspension, exhaust, body...). But its all up to your friend, whatever he likes, and whatever he wants to do.

probably buying new parts and doing a small scale rebuild/upgrade prior to or during install. I could see it happening. Or, he could of had a shop do it - I got quoted $3500 for a local shop to do it lol.

3-4k for a complete B-series swap in a 4th gen Civic/CRX is not all that UNbelieveable. You must consider the Hasports or Place Racing Mounts, B-series shift linkage, B-series axles, intermediate shaft, throttle cable, B-series radiator hoses, etc.

During the swap is the BEST time for the customer to have the shop change the timing belt, water pump, clutch, etc. Labor is soooo much easier while the engine and tranny is out.

If the customer just wants to me to drop in a B16 package from Japan which we have no clue how much mileage is on them WITHOUT changing those items, I make note of it on the invoice. If shortly after down the road their clutch starts slipping, or worse, their timing belt snaps and the engine bends valves....that was their call.

Fortunately, none of my customers have chosen to take the risk or cheap way out by NOT having me perform those tasks.

Its a WIN WIN situation for everyone......The customer saves $$$ in the long run in labor ( because its easier to do that stuff now then later when its already in the car ), and when that customer's vehicle leaves my shop.....I know they have a fresh clutch, and their timing belt and water pump is good for another 80,000 miles .

Remember, customers swap these motors in for performance. Its not like a soccer mom getting a replacement engine for her minivan. These Honda motors will be revved to 8,200 rpm on a daily basis!!! These drivers will be harder on their motors.

I understand however, some "shops" or people who do the swap themselves are not too familar with disassembling the engine/tranny package to replace the clutch or timing belt/water pump.

I've seen a couple of instances of kids ruining their motors by doing incorrect valve adjustments and timing belt replacements.

If you are getting quoted by someone or a shop for a B-series into a Civic/CRX for less than 3k, some corners are being cut someway. Either it be in parts or labor.

Watch out for the shops or people who cant get the wiring right and will take out the "check engine" bulb to disguise the problem. I've seen this come to my shop a few occasions. Think of all the swapped HONDA/ACURA that might be out on the street running not how HONDA intended or to their full potential .

yea when i said 3200 that is motor, shipping, clutch, flywheel, fluids, random crap, some bolt ons, and 1/2 payment for a cherry picker (me and a friend split the cost)
