Default OK i have searched and im currently on the state driver license website. Still got a Q or 2

Ok ive look at almost every thread on here, been searching ont he florida DMV website and went through the whole MSF website but id still like to clear a few things up.

Ok im 17 will be 18 in december and plan on getting a bike soon maybe before i turn 18.

What insurance is the minumum to legally ride a motorcycle and what is the recomended insurance, like what would you guys that have been riding for a while recomend to me.

So if i take one of the riding classes and pass it and all, all i have to do is take the 25 question test at the DMV and i get the motorcycle license correct, because the class gives me a waiver to where i dont have the take the motorcycle driving test at the DMV correct.

Are there any restriction that someone over 18 doesnt have that i do being under 18 and all?

What about registering my motorcycle? Anything particular i should know about that?

Sorry for the noob questions
Flame away.
Thanks for your help in advance

Those are state specific questions you're asking.. Mase is from Florida, he'll have answers for you.

Recommended insurance depends on the bike. Expect to pay a lot.

What am i expecting to pay lets say for a year? I do have a quite of bit of tickets right now for my 95 civic dx i pay 123 a month which isnt bad but im pretty sure i got anther ticket the insurance comp hasnt caught up to yet. This is with allstate full coverage 500 or 1000 i cant remember, deductible.

if you plan on buying a new bike from a dealer you must have full coverage for the bike in order to take the bike home. full coverage will cover anything that happens to your bike...theft, damgae, accidents. anything. but it will prolly cost about 3 grand a year. thats just a guess. i was quoted 4 grand a year and i have 3 points on my record. it dpends mainly on your driving record and type of bike you plan on buying.

I just got a 00 CBR 600 and I took the Motorcycle course in Cali. When I told them about the course, they said, "Oh! That's good!" and that was about it. If you get a loan for the motorcycle, the credit union or bank will want to see proof of full coverage of insurance. You don't need it if you are paying for the bike with your own money.

I dont plan on buying a brand new bike and i dont really want to pay for full coverage. Thats WAY too much money. I think ills tick with liability, isnt that what most of you have?

I am only 17 and i couldnt get a loan anyways so i would definitely be buying one cash from a private seller.
Are motorcylces the same as cars, as in you have to be 18 to have th etitle in your name? My brother is 26 would it be ok to have it in his name and me jsut ride it? And since it would be his name on the title would he have to be insured?

being as though your 17 and you probably don't have a lot of experience... It might not be a good idea to get just liability. What are you going to do if you lay your bike down and crush some crap? Or you run into something and the ferring around your light is smashed to pieces? I don't think you are going to be able to ride it with it like that. ALSO, do you have good health insurance? What about life insurance? You don't think about that stuff when you are young. I didn't, but now that I'm older, I have the BEST health insurance (Military), the BEST life insurance (Military), AND full coverage on my bike.

Well yeah i understand you but ont he full coverage i dont think it would be a wise investment to pay 3-4k a year for insurance when ithe bike only costs me 5k If i lay it down then ill still have my truck to drive, and ill just pay for it to get fixed. Just doesnt seem liek a good idea ot me, it wont be my primary transportation...

I do of course have good health insurance right now through my mom shes a partner in a large accoutning firm and after high school i plan on joining the USMC, or just working for my moms firm. Either way i will have good insurance.

Maybe later when i am more experienced i will buy and newer more expensive bike and htne get full coverage. But now i just dotn think it woul dbe worth the cost. I have too many tickets and such that the insurance will probably be outrageous with just liability too.

I def cant say i have a lot of experience with street bikes but i get the basics because i rode dirt bikes competitively for a while but i know its prob totally diff between a dirt biek and street bike... Thanks for all your help guys..

Just remember one thing. When you "wreck" your bike, you usually don't walk away from the scene. You usually ride away in an ambulance. A few days before I bought my bike, I went to the in-laws house. On the way there, we got caught up in traffic. When we got up to where the ambulance was, there was a bike torn apart, on the side of the road, and a guy wrapped up on stretcher.

Remember what they call people who ride "crotch rockets"... ORGAN DONORS
There IS a reason for that!

Be safe!

Yeah i understand what you're saying, thanks for the advice man.
Thats why i said lay it down or drop it and not get in a wreck lol. I just odnt reall y see the gain by having full coverage on a 4-5k bike....whne you will be paying that much for insurance on it for 1 year and if it is stolen they arent gonna give you that much for the bike.
Thanks!

well i just got approved for my motorcycle loan. im getting a 2003 suzuki gsx-r600. the salesman told me that when buying a suzuki you dont neeed full coverage. all they ask if at least liability. yamaha for sure needs to be full coverage before taking it off the lot. im also gettin this deal for 300 bucks that covers my bike from getting stolen for 3 years. If my bike does get stolen they pay the first 5000 towards another one...its not a bad deal....hope this helps

Yeah ive been looking for bikes in the cycle trader online and int he magazine. What about a 2000 Katana 600 for a starter bike what do you think of these. From reviews i read online they are underpowered but what do you guys think? They are alot lower priced than a cbr or gsxr.

I found a 2001 katana 600 yellow 4200 miles never dropped jet kit, corban fiber exhaust, filterm tank bra, for 4800 OBO

1. 2001 gsxr 600 "low miles" m4 pipe rear fender kit huuger frame sliders 5000 or best offer

2. 2001 gsxr 600 3500 miles yoshi exhaust 5000 OBO

3. 1999 gsxr600 10k miles blue and white d%d pipe "needs nothing and runs great" 4500obo

MORE MY PRICE RANGE
4. 1997 gsxr600 black, grey and blue full yoshimura exh, clear turn signals, smoke shiel, 3800obo 13k miles

5. 1998 yamaha fzr 600 yoshi pipe "good reliable bike" few scratches bnut not dropped. 3650

6. 1999 cbr600 "set up for track, sharksinzs new chain and sprocket, hintle pipe, jet kit, bike runs great 3900 obo" Set up for track???

7. 1999 cbr600 13kmiles erion racing slip on exh smoke shield new dunlop 208 rear tire needs nothing really clean 5000 OBO

8. 1999 cbr600 f3 all red with blakc wheels toshimura pipe awesome condition 4600 obo 13k miles

9. 1997 cbr600 two bothers exhaust new ties and brakes "decent shape" 3400 obo

10. http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/4/0/49306340.htm

Ill probably end up getting somethign a lot cheaper i jsut want something that looks good, i dotn care about ti bein scratched up some just not dropped or "old" looking i want the newer shaped look i dont know if you know what i mean. Like its cool if i havbea 1997 as long as it looks like the same style as the newer 1999's or 00's.

SOmething to start on that i wont cry about if i drop it of mess it up a little. Mostly lookin at price!

OK one at a time.
If you are under 21 by law to get your motorcycle endorsement you have to take the msf course. To get a permit you dont have to be 21. I was 19 or 20 when I got my permit.

At the msf course I believe they give you the written 25 question test, and you also take the skills test (Road test) to get your license. Basically they will hand you a certificate, you take it to the dmv and they update your license with an endorsement (Assuming you have passed the class and tests).

As for insurance, most finance companies require it to protect their investment if they are loaning money to you for a bike. You dont have to carry insurance in florida if you ride with a helmet. To ride without a helmet you have to have 10,000 in liability coverage in case you split your mellon.

Registering your bike is the same as a car, you do not have to prove you have insurance though. There are the impact fees and tax and all that crap. I just went through it on the 929 less than a year ago. If you claim that you paid less than 80% of market value for the bike, you may be asked to prove the amount you paid via providing a bill of sale that is signed by a notory. I went through that because I bought my 929 for such a good deal.....

FYI: riding without insurance can kick your butt. My buddy t-boned an explorer and had to pay 1200 to get it fixed as well as cover the repairs on his bike. Thats what he gets for darting out from a sidestreet and not paying enough attention to traffic. (He has been riding 10+yrs)

Any other questions ask, I have been riding in florida for about 6 yrs.

Hey man, good to know there is someone in FL that can help a newb out. I dont plan on getting a loan i plan on paying cash i paid for m civic with cash and im selling it to buy a bike. I think ive basiclly got all the license and insurance stuff figured out thanks to your post and other stuff on the web.

Im 100% sure i want to get insurance but i guess liability only. What do you think would be a good amount of coverage to get?

Also what do you think out of those choices above sounds like a good deal i also looked some more and found a few more honda cbr600's for anywhere from 3400-4500 97's and 98's. and even more 96's
Do 96 cbrs look good i cant tell from the crppy quality cycle trader pics.

http://www.bikez.biz/ads/showad.php?ad=483

Here is a picture of a 96 f3.

They are excellent starter bikes. Enough power, great handling, very comfortable. I would highly recommend any 91-98 cbr 600. 91-94 is an f2, 95+ is f3. I have a 95 with a race prepped motor and I love it. They are very abundant so parts are widely available. Also aftermarket support is excellent because it is so popular.

The race prepped bike is not street legal. All lights, mirrors and blinkers have been removed. The oem fairings have been removed for more sturdy/lighter fiberglass plastics. It would cost you a decent amount of money to make that one street legal again. Also many people use salvage title bikes as race bikes, so even if you were to put lights/blinkers/horn etc on it you may not be able to register it for street use.

Look for a clean used f2/f3 and take someone who knows about bikes to check for crash damage. F3's will take alot of abuse due to the steel frame where most newer bikes have aluminum frames which will break easier.
I would think you would be able to find something good for 2500-4000, depending on the seller.

A 95 or 96 dcr seems like what i may end up with. They seem like they look pretty nice, im not into the color schemes ive seen so far. But i can solve that...
