Default The Unbearable Lightness of Steering

I am becoming more and more aware of the lightness of the R's steering and it is beginning to annoy me. I am not getting as much feel through the wheel as I think I should be getting - on turn-in especially. I often find myself wishing the steering was nicely weighted, but this just isn't the case.

I haven't driven any other ITRs other than my own, so I don't know if this is just my car or a flaw in the R in general. Any suggestions or comments?

Do you still have power steering?

Buy a BMW.

An Integra isn't all that bad to drive without powersteering as long as you put a resevoir to circulate fluid through the pump. That is, if you don't parallel park much. Steering feel is nice once you get over 5-10mph.

Other than that, maybe an AEM PS pulley to slow the pump down some? Although I don't think you're going to do much like that.

That was my only complaint about my Hype R - the steering felt overboosted. But I was too much of a puss to leave the belt off

I never got a clear answer about whether underdrive pulleys would affect the steering feel, or whether removing the pump the right way (recirculating the fluid) would result in a lighter feel than just a removed belt.

Are there any factory non-PS racks that will fit a Hype R?

Do you have an aftermarket wheel on your car? The stock airbag wheel on the R is quite heavy and really dampens the feel of your steering inputs. A good aftermarket steering wheel is a remarkable improvement.

All Hondas have over-boosted steering. That's cause their products mainly cater to non-car nuts who like all the cushy luxuries.

Change all the bushings in the front suspension to ones with a harder composition.
Check your alignment (maybe try more front toe out).

And if you want really want to be hardcore - disconnect the p/s belt.

And what Victor said as well.

Otherwise try a different brand of tire.

I believe Brian @ Fastbrakes was working on getting us a faster steering rack so it would be fewer turns lock to lock.....

THAT would be kickass.

As for PS, it's not worth 2 ponies to go through the hassle for... but I don't like it nor do I need it. I think I'll underdrive the ac and alternator, and go manual when that better ratio rack becomes available. 1:12 would be nice.....

PS is still installed. Stock wheel. Just had an alignment and addd some toe out in front. Does caster effect the steering feel (i know it isn't adjustable)?

Doesn't additional toe-out in the front make your already-light steering even lighter?

Don't know about the pulleys, but removing the pump and recirculating the fluid through a simple system w/ a breather works great. The steering feel is much better than stock, and with the stock steering wheel it is still easy to drive around town (you'll get a mild arm workout when trying to park in tight spaces though). The best part is it only costs $30 and I'm sure pulleys are more than that.

I'm too much of a wimp to deal with no power steering. The aftermarket wheel does help somewhat and it does relay road feel/feedback a lot better than the stock wheel.

The system was fine for me but after awhile it really got on my nerves. Felt like driving a minivan. I liked the tight steering of the manual rack. It allows me to "feel" the road much better and I am no longer scared of over adjusting.

I can't imagine autocrossing without power steering.

I have no complaints about my steering feel, 350 mm steering wheel + AEM power steering pulley. See if you can find someone with the same setup and find out if it is right for you.

It's not that great...I like power steering so I'm biased

My fat arms can't handle daily driving with no power steering.

Warranty? What's that?

Before my car had 20k miles, she had a ghetto Toda B setup. Ghetto = running B's with a Nintendo, JDM 4-1 and no valvetrain mods.

Fun car. Just wish there weren't so many stunnas in Raleigh. I'm happier with factory b00st that I can leave unlocked in front of the house at night

Where did you get your alignment done in Austin? I still haven't found an alignment place that i can really trust here....

Racecar Engineering just finished a 4 month series on Steer Axis Incline and all the factors that affect it.

You may want to try and get a more negative offset and simultaneously get the benefits of more road feel and less torque steer. The BTCC Civic Type R with much power in the front wheel runs more negative offset.
