Default How to identify B18C5 head?

I can clearly see the B18C5 etched on front of the block but what kind of marking are on the ITR head that separate it from a B18C1 or B16A?

Is the stock ITR spark plug cover is plastic or aluminum? Where can I get an aluminum one?

Thanks.

It is relatively difficult to tell if the head you are looking at is, in fact, an ITR head. I know that when you buy just the ITR head there is bright green paint by the back left corner right next to where the distributor bolts to.

If it is a USDM ITR head it will have the year 97 through 01 stamped into it above the number 3-4 exhaust port. If it is a JDM ITR head it can have the years 95 to 01 stamped into it.

It will also have a PR3 stamp on it as well. But, this does not help because B16 and B17 heads have the PR3 stamp on it as well.

I would recommend looking in the ports when they are relatively clean to see the factory port job. But, even this may not be a telltale sign because it could have been ported by somebody other than the factory.

The valve springs will have yellow paint on the intakes and blue paint on the exhaust side. This too is not a definite indication of it being an ITR head because the springs could have been purchased.

A combination of a couple of these features MAY indicate that it is an ITR head.

If it is a GS-R head it will have P72 stamped on it. So, that will distinguish it from the B16/B17/ITR heads.

The OEM spark plug cover is plastic. You can order an aluminum cover from comapnies like DC or Comptech.

Also, doesn't the gs-r head have small channels on the intake ports?I think for the injectors.

Thanks Kenji, that really helped. Somebody posted a while back that the ITR spark plug cover was aluminum and while I was cleaning my engine bay the other day, I noticed that mine was plastic (I was like, WTF?). Are there any differences between the JDM head and the USDM head (valves, springs, lifters, rockers, cams, etc)? Where is the P72 or P73 marking stamped on the head?

Thanks.

i think the JDM cams were more aggresive then 97-99 USDM/Canadian ITRs...00-01 intake cams were the same....

as far as the stamps look above the exhaust ports....there the year and model of head stamped PR3 or P72...

no, we don't know if they are the same as 98+ spec JDM ITR cams. The part number is different, but no one (to my knowlege) has mic'd them. The consensus seems to be that they are in between the JDM 98+ spec (aka CTR) and USDM '97-98 spec. -C
