Annoying rattle.....
I have a 99 GSR with about 43k miles. Rattles like a **** between 3000-4000 rpm but goes away when out that RPM range. The search feature tells me that its probably the A-Pipe because my heatshields have had enough of my baseball bat (which didn't fix the problem).
Anything else it could be? It appears that the only way to fix this problem is to replace the header unless any of you experts have other ideas on how. Greddy kit this Thursday so don't think too hard for a solution
TIA

I haven't had time to get it on a lift yet but a little poking around at the heat shields didn't produce any results (didn't stop or make the rattle worse). I will see what happens after the headers are gone. If the rattle doesn't go away afterwards I will be very annoyed.
Thanks for the reply

If it rattles at idle, its a heat shield problem.. If it rattles only around 3k-4k rpm, its the b-pipe header. Its a common problem, Acura has a B-pipe kit to fix those problems... or do what I did,, just get a brand new aftermarket ones.

not true.
my car just went through this same ordeal....39k miles...rattle between 3-4k rpms, no rattle at idle. took it to the dealer (still under warranty), they removed the heatshield on my cat (service bulletin said to do so).
no more rattle.

Well of course the first logical thing to do is check the heat shield... but if you're not hearing any rattle except 3-4k (it was 3500 for me) it will be most likely the b-pipe. I may have been too vague on my previous post.

and what i was saying is that my car rattled only at 3-4k rpm's. it wasn't the header.

is there any other solution than removing the heat shield? And what is the B pipe? sorry for all the questions just trying to learn here. I have the problem, weird noise between 3200-4000rpm (every gear) and disappear at 4100rpm.
thanks a lot,
thanks a lot,
If its the heat shield, one alternative to removin it is getting one of those metal zip-ties... I got some at the Ford dealership near by.. they are the ones that you use a flat head screwdriver to tighten.. you can use it to tie around the heat shield and prevent it from rattling.. B pipe is the lower portion of your headers... it connected to your cat. converter.
Thanks for all of the replies. I seriously don't think that the problem lies within my heatshields. The rattling noise is not a "tinny" type of rattle but rather a more solid type which leads me to believe it is my A-pipe part of the header. It only rattles within the 3-4000 range, 3500-3800 is where the sound is very audible. After that it goes away.
The correct term for the lower portion of the header is "A-Pipe". The B-Pipe is the portion of the exhaust after the cat before the muffler (its basically your exhaust piping).
I'll see what happens after my Greddy kit goes in later this week. If the rattle is still there then I will start messin' with the heat shields. Thanks again guys.

that's exactly what mine was doing....it was the cat heatshield. rattled so bad i could feel it vibrate through the floor.

Ok so the rattle goes away after the header is replaced. However, I now have bigger problems, possibly with my crankshaft.

You were prolly right about the problem being the A-pipe its a known problem for the GSR stock header. Mine had the same problem, It was fixed with a hammer
. the problem is right where it goes from 2-1. If you want a quick fix just wack it a few times right there, thats all it takes.
