Default Question for track day instructors? Must you have the same seats?

Hi guys. I have a track day at Lime Rock coming up in a couple weeks and im looking maybe purchase a corbeau forza for track days.

Now i was only planning on buying one seat. The stock civic seats might not work for with the 5pt belts, but ill see once they are mounted.

Now, will instructors refuse to instruct if the car isnt furnished with equal seats? Im asking cause i saw a post in another forum where this was mentioned.

Thanks.

Mike

I believe nasa requires equal restraints (read: same type of seat/belts) for both instructor and driver. Either way, its nice to provide the same level of safety for your instructor.

I'd have to agree on this one. In my ITR for the first couple of HPDE events where i had an instructor i kept the stock seats for both of us and used 5 point harnesses (with 4 pt rollbar). Once i got signed off or went solo i purchased a Forza.

do you think there wuold be any safety issues with running the stock civic seats with a 5pt.? Im asking because they dont have the typical headrest. It is the goofy arching headrest. Im guessing it wont be a problem.

I use a stock seat for my passengers. Equal restraints though.

Which club are you going with? I have spoke to most of them and seats must be equally approved at least. So if one seats is FIA approved, then then the other has to.

I have never worried about it but I tend to exert a little more "discipline" on students than a lot of people, in terms of how hard they push.

I couldn't say what NASA's or BSR's policies are on seats. My racecar has a stock passenger seat and it hasn't been a problem when I ask for instruction. And when I instruct, I've ridden in quite a few cars with one race bucket and one stock seat.

Do make sure you spend some time installing the passenger harness so that it fits reasonably well - getting them around the stock seat is less than ideal, so do what you can to make it work.

i think as long as you have harnesses on both sides you'll be ok. If you only had a seat belt for them and you had the bucket/harness then you might have some problems.

Probably asked you this before but are you doing the event with SCDA on friday the 27th?

I concur with Corey on the restraint thing , as long as they're equal I'm happy

....but its ultimately up to each instructor , just dont want you to have a problem at the track itself.

Thats pretty much it. Dont count on the instructor being ok with it, but most likely it either will be ok or there will be another instructor there who will be ok with it.

I wasnt real keen on the idea of mismatched seats at first, but at ITR expo instructing 4 students, I was ecstatic that one of my students had harnesses. All those g-forces beat me all up and it really was nice to strap in to a car, regardless of what kind of seat it was.

If anyone's actually considering buying a nicer seat for the passenger side, you should get a LARGE one. It's gonna suck when your instructor can't fit in some small bucket and you have to sit around hoping someone else is free to ride with you.

I have EVO2's and I still ran into one instructor who didn't really fit.

one good thing about using a stock seat for your instructor is that almost everybody can fit in it.

If you do use a stock seat please make sure that the harnesses actually work with it, that is that the shoulder straps dont slide off the sides (use "H" shoulder belts) and the sub strap is more or less vertical. you may need to punch a hole in the seat to get the sub strap right. if you have a nice stock seat (type r) you dont want to cut up you can get a junkyard seat and cut that up instead.

my guess is MOST instructors will be OK with a stock seat and the same harness you have. I am, as long as the harness install is done right

All I ever worry about is the harnesses (and make sure they're installed somewhat correctly ). And I agree that if you do a passenger side seat, make sure it's a large one. Some of us widebody instructors need that

Everyone is overlooking one big problem.

92-95 Civic seats have a headrest that is connected to the rest of the seat by only one "leg" (for lack of a better word).

Because it only has one leg, the harnesses cannot be used with stock seats.

Trying to do so will result in the harness "finding" it's way over to the single leg and causing strain on the neck of the occupant of the seat.

Cliff notes:

Do not ever use aftermarket 4/5/6 pt harnesses with stock 92-95 Civic seats.

I will also be at the SCDA event June 27th!

One interesting question.... When I did an event with BMWCCA the first 3 laps the instructor drove your car to show you the line. What happens if you buy a seat to fit you and say a larger instructor comes along that doesn't fit?

I'll be mounting some 6-pt (or 4 pt) belts (for the first time, with a Kirk rollbar) in my ITR for the Summit Point Hyperfest HPDE, but will be running with the stock seats and have not yet decided to cut through the seats.
What whould be acceptable, the 6-point arrangement going over/past the front of the seat to the front rail mointing bolts, or just rinning the belts as a 4-point setup?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Use them as 5/6 point belts, and mount the sub belt as far backwards as possible, wrap it around the front of the seat. Not ideal, but it will suffice - i had no injuries other than mild whiplash when i stuffed my car last year.

why not just cut up the GSR seats? I will be at the track friday afternoon for a bit and sat/sun if you'd like me to take a look at the mountings.

Maybe you could get a plastic insert for the belt hole from sparco/recaro?
