Default Towing 1200lbs with a type R???

I read in the manual that the normal integras are rated for 1,000lbs of towing. The Type R is rated at.....ZERO.... well, my warranty just ran out anyway (july 10th was 4 years), so....... anyone know if the car can tow... i am only going to tow a 1000lb Westfield on whatever kind of cheap / light trailer.... and am only going to tow it once in a great while to the track (not pulling it out of water like a boat)

thanks if you can ad some insight.

If you like being able to shift, don't tow anything. The ITR transmission is not built for towing.

i think 1200 lbs is a bit much for our R's....

i've been contemplating the same thing though... gotta get my motorcycle to floriday from pgh... ugh.. motorcycle = 400 lbs, trailer = 150, cabin filled with ****... start getting up there in weight.

anyone with experience?

D,

just rent something if you can afford it. Maybe a big truck and have a parent or Aleph drive down with you? I would def. not want to tow anything with the R.

My civic shifted like crap after I towed a small car for a friend. If you like the smooth buttery feel of the shift you have now, dont do it. Rent a truck.

Some of the hardware and home improvement stores rent pickups for 19+ an hour or so. How far do you need to go?

How much stuff do you need to tow? When I moved from NJ to FL last year this is what I did.

I had to move 3 cars, a motorcycle, plus all of my **** down here. I had a 24 ft Ryder truck with all of my ****, plus my motorcycle in the back using tie downs. I rented a flat bed trailer with the R on it under a car cover. My g/f took her car and my friend drove my other car.

It cost me like $1200 for everything one way...the trailer was like 200, but I got everything down here in one fell swoop, I wasn't driving that distance again. It may seem like a lot of money, but if you have a lot to bring down, it will save you money rather than having to go back up north to bring more **** down.

just my .02...

BTW, use Ryder, not UHAUL, they couldn't even get me a damn flat bed trailer w/ 2 months notice...I wasn't going to use one of those two wheeled dollies for my R.

well, looks like i'm only taking what will fit in the car, or on the roof rack (kuhmos on the roof rack).

so, imagine me sitting in the driver seat, and the rest of the car filled with ****. that's how much stuff i'm taking. whatever doesnt' fit, dosen't go with me.

i can't afford $1000 on a rental as i'm quitting my job and taking out massive school loans. fuq dat.

Do you know what the difference is that makes it weaker in the regard?

The factors that effect a vehicles tow capaciity are power/engine, brakes, suspension, tires and transmission. The tow vehicle weight ratio to the trailer plays a major roll as well. (Can you say "jacknife") Of these, the R is limmited mostly by it's weight and the LSD transmission.

RWD is better for towing anyway. The best car to tow with is a big station wagon like a Buick Roadmaster, with a nice big V8 and 4-speed auto. manuals suck for towing

not true...you'll get more power (HP) out of the manual, not to mention you can start w/ higher RPM's

I've heard arguments both ways WRT auto/manual. But look at the 18 wheelers. The transmissions are as big or bigger than the engines in those, and they're both manual and automatics, yes, thats right automatics. The rateing on most light trucks does NOT change with manuals or automatics or does so slightly in either direction. It's a trade-off. If auto, you need a oil cooler for towing, if manual, you will replace the clutch sooner or have a HD unit. I would not want a manual with a 4x4 on a mountain trail. Clutching on a switch-back is scary.

hell, if I had a truck (4X4 at least) I'd want an auto trans...there's no reason for me to be shifting, not doing any offroad racing....

That would be one of the funniest things to see. A Type-R with a tow hitch!

I'm going to put one on mine to tow tires to the track. I'm sick of the smell and the constant lifting. You know how much work it is to fit two sets of 225s in the hatch even with the rear seats removed? Then I'll be able to bring all three sets of rubber along. Not to mention tools, camping gear, tools, spare parts, jack stands, tools... Hmmmm... trailers...

I was told by my dealer never use the R for towing. The b.s. tow hooks are located under the body work and can really screw the bumper up...

Those tow hooks from the factory are strong as hell. Another idiot dealer. The rear tow hook is the jack and tiedown point. The front ones are extremely strong too. These are what I use to tiedown the car to my trailer. Trust me, it's not moving anywhere.

Now maybe he's talking about the ******** that put on those fake tow hooks.

Come on, not being able to tow more than 1,000 lbs in the R????

I towed a 2,000 UHaul in my f--king Miata accross country (2,800 in 5 days), and back!! That is just ridiculous!

UHaul will have a towing spec for the car, and mount a tow hitch as needed for the car. If you want to tow something in the R, go for it, but it is your car, so understand it puts a strain on the tranny and motor.

Default HA HA HA!!!

I am talking about those people that put a trailer hitch and ball on the back end of their little sports car. It would be funny to see some guys Type R that he loves so much with one of these sticking out the back.
