Default An idea to avoid all this scammer nonsense, let me know what you think

I've just spent a good while reading all the posts in the "Have you been scammed....." thread. There are a lot of sob stories in there, people getting take for $2000 and even more. I have had the luck, i guess, of not being scammed. While reading the thread, I came up with any idea that seems to protect the seller and the buyer .

Did this recently when i bought some inexpensive parts from somebody in SoCal. A long way from GA

take the shipping costs, multiply it by 2. Send twice the shipping costs to the buyer. Buyer, when you get the money ship it COD for minus whatever extra shipping costs they sent you. When it arrives, either the seller pays or not, either way, the shipping is paid for b/c you got twice as much so you don't get screwed paying to have it sent back to you if they refuse payment. Seller, worst case scenario you lose twice the costs of shipping. I still haven't come up with a full proof plan for sellers, but I guess you could always meet somewhere. Hopefully someone can use this to be a little more at ease. I know whenever I buy something online, whether it be ebay or paypal, I'm always nervous/cautious/anxious until the package actually gets here and is as described. Anybody else have any ideas or comments??

It's not about the shipping. It's about sending someone $2000 and getting nothing. Send them twice the cost of shipping and when it gets to you, they'll get the rest, and even if you decide you don't want it, they still have your shipping money, so it won't cost them anything to have it shipped back to them.

If you do a search, this was already beaten to death awhile back. I got scammed for about 500 bucks. I tried, and tried, and tried to get some kinda of rating system, you know kinda like paypal? The only thing that I got Dustin to do was a waiting period for NEW USERS. New Users have to wait 1 month to even enter the classifieds. Hey, it's something right?

What I ask people to do is take a picture of the product and that day's local newspaper in hand. That way you can be 99% sure that the product shown is what your going to recive. Then as everyone else said, escrow.com is great.

How does that guarantee anything. It could just be a picture of a product you're not going to see because they're scamming you!!! Must be that other 1% huh??

buy from people you know.. plain and simple. if you've never seen them post before, chances are you don't know who they are or their rep.
it's as simple as that.
I've bought easily $10,000 worth of **** of H-T classifieds in the past year: sleeved motors, turbo stuff, electronic devices, etc etc..., and haven't been scammed for $1.
Why? because i was smart about it. So should everyone.

a seller not willing to go out of their way to make you comfortable with the sale is one you shouldn't buy from. I always send pics of the item they are buying and even pics as I package it up for shipping and once its ready to go. I think the buyer's piece of mind is what should tell you if you are making the right decision buying from someone.

i concur. i would rather have a buyer call me, so we can talk about the transaction rather than going through im. i will gladly give out my #, and will answer the phone or call back if needed. but then again, i am not a scammer....

Just talk to someone who knows that that person is not a scammer plain and simple I already bought a clip from someone and he sent it to me, just need to know the right people, ask questions and get to know the people a little first
