Default Exhaust comparison, noise, performance, price

Hey guys, for my future mods, I am trying to find an exhaust that provides a little gain over stock, (espcecially when combined with headers, cat etc) but is nice and quiet. I really hate these loud sounding exhausts I always hear.

Please rate any exhausts you can think of on a scale of 1-10, and let the stock exhaust be as such:

brand - noise - performance - price
Stock - 5 - 5 - 5

so basically, if you can think of any exhausts that may be higher or lower in these 3 categorys, please list them here.

I've found the following in a post, but don't really have the info I want from them:
Apexi WS, Tanabe g-power, Themal Stealth, or Mugen

Apex`i WS 7-6-9 sounds awesome with header and intake, all though its not the best performance wise. I had one on my 4th gen and i payed less than 400 shipped for it.

Mugen 10-10-8-3

I wanted noticeable gains (mostly in the midrange) with a nice tip and stock sound when cruising. Found everything I was looking for with the Mugen. Only downside is the price tho.

Yes, I am a Mugen *****. The quality is peerless & the sound is incredible, nothing else comes close. Now, as for the performance, we all know that for most N/A applications real whp gains from any exhaust are minimal. That said I've never actually had it dyno'd, and discounting my butt-dyno, I really couldn't tell you what I gained. According to my gf it SOUNDS faster...

As for the price...Am I sorry that I paid $1000? NO. Was it worth it? IMO, YES.
maybe 2-3 whp
a cheap plastic Mugen badge
a shiny tip
a nice throaty sound:
$1000

My car not sounding like a pissed-off pneumatic egg beater:
PRICELESS

RS*R - 10-8-7

Probably one of the quietest exausts on the market. I can hear my intake over my exaust, but IMO there are significant performance gains. And it sounds very clean and throaty even though it is very quiet. But be ready to drop about 7-800Cdn.

Very interesting post. I've been wondering about this too. Any ratings of the Greddy Evo? How about oem or jdm factory exhaust replacements?

So, for the scale, your saying 1 = quietest, 10 = loudest? I see stock was given a 5, which i'm guessing is average sound, apexi which is a loud exhaust was given a 7 which I guess was 2 points louder than stock, but then mugen, which is supposed to be quiet was given a 10 which kill the scale for me. Dosn't that mean that its the loudest?

Yeah, actually I just got back to this post. I should have made my intentions more clear.

By 5 5 5 I meant the stock exhaust is totally neutral, in sound, cost and performance.

Items that perform better should be rated higher, items that are MORE loud should be rated higher, items that are more quiet should be rated LOWER than 5.

Anyway, for those of you who replied, can you edit your posts given this clarification? From my understanding, a Mugen's noise level would be 6 or so?

Thanks!!

Where do you guys find your Mugen stuff for Preludes? Only thing I have found from them for my 5th gen is a header. Everything else is for the Civic, Integra, Accord.

oh yeah I love my exhaust/ And didnt notice any loss on low end/ yet pulls harder from second gear on/ not much of a difference between silenced and unsilenced except it sounds better without it in.

Greddy EVO
The sound is nice and deep, mine rasps the first time through the gears until it warms up then no more rasping( I hate that sound ). Nice deep rumble when in 5th cruisin, sound great in vtec. On your scale ill give it a 8/9.
I noticed a gain when it was installed, but no dyno yet, im sure someone has got one. compared to other exhaust ive seen tested in mags(im sure theyre biased) for hp gains greddy is always near the top. Ill give it an 8 cause im sure there are better, perhaps mugen or custom piping.
Price = 10. I got mine out of the Honda-tech classifieds for 250 plus my stock exhaust. They seem pretty easy to find if you look on ebay, h-t classifieds, or preludonline classifieds, etc.
Overall I love it.

Join the club, I just got a 5th gen and I used to have a 1994 civic. Coming from the civic to the prelude aftermarket world almost makes me want to go back to the civic. Its dam near impossible to find parts, then when you find them, their going for rediculous prices cause everyones hunting that same part down. For example, I REALLY NEED A FRONT OEM LIP FOR A 5TH GEN but am about to just give up the search. Most I found is lips for like $180.00. Thats crazy for a lip. I could buy an aftermarket body front bumper for that price!!! But back to the exhaust ratings...

Tanabe G-Force Power Medallion - 6.5-7-Don't think they still make them, but if you can find a good used one it's certainly worth 250-350...

Really a pretty nice exhaust. Deep tone, but not intrusive into cabin. Big double-wall tip looked good w/o being ricey too - won't be mistaken for any other exhaust.

I rated the Mugen exhaust on the QUALITY of the sound, not on the volume itself. No, it's not terribly loud, but I think a lot of people have the wrong impression about it because it IS NOT exactly quiet either. In VTEC it straight screams, the difference is that it's not in a ricey or annoying way.

The best way to describe it is more of a mix between a roar and a howl than anything else I've ever heard. The tone is actually so deep that at low revs you can FEEL the exhaust note reverberating through the car like a low rumble more than you just hear it. It doesn't sound like a big block, but I guarantee that you would be hard pressed to find ANY other exhaust that can make an N/A 4 cyl sound stronger.

As for it's ratings, I think the quality of the sound is just as important as the volume. When I've got my foot in it, people around me definitely know that I'm there and I'm not playing, but the sound that it produces isn't going to make anyone giggle. ****, my cars is actually slow as hell but I've scared off faster cars and had people ask what type of engine work I've had done just by revving back when they rev on me. Someone else tell me that your exhaust does that.

Edit: How do i quote someones post?

I am talking about the Apex`i World Sport, it is a pretty quiet exhaust a little louder than stock but has a nice little roar when you get on it. You may be thinking of the N1 which is one of the loudest exhausts you can get for our cars.

what about the thermal exhaust. i noticed in a different thread that it was rated over every exhaust mentioned. this maybe do to the lack of the people that have voted or because it is a realitivly new thread. i was just wondering how people think it stands up to all of the rest of these.

I can get you a clip with the Mugen exhaust if you guys want.

But it'll be from my digital still camera (Canon S40). I would just need a host for a 4-5mb clip.

Can't get it tho until maybe Thurs. or so until some friends come over (some prelude ppl want to prep their cars for the 1/4 strip this weekend)..

Final Flash: I totally agree with your assessment of the Mugen exhaust. I wanted a quality exhaust that was quiet when cruising on the freeway but made its presence known when you got on it. I used to scoff when hearing ppl making comments about their butt dynos...but I was pleasantly surprised with the extra midrange that the exhaust gave...

People looking for Mugen stuff can contact James Chan at vtec98prelude@yahoo.com I've been buying stuff from him for several years...great guy with great prices.

$180 sounds about right for the OEM lip. It comes prepainted (if you can still find it in your color) so the price isn't too bad.

Great reply, thanks. Man I wish I had the moula for the mugen exhaust now. I guess, once again, I must start saving.
