5th gen DX coupe good for auto x?
Is it a good base to start out with in autox and road racing? I want a great handling/fast car that I can road race and auto x with. And I wanna know if I should keep it or get a better car. (easier said then done, I'm only 17). Should I invest all that $ on a Civic?
Drive what you have, and only start upgrading components on your car when (a) you know what's considered a legal modification for the class you wish to compete in, and (b) you KNOW that that is the component that is restricting you from a faster time. Civics keep their value throughout the years, so don't be afraid you're losing value on your car when it's time to sell.
I started autocrossing with a 5th gen hatch. Then I went to an HPDE... Then I started to concentrate all my extra money and time towards club racing.
Back to your question, yes a 5th gen coupe will be good for autoX.

Any car will be good provided you want to learn how to drive. However i advise you to do some research on roadracing... i guarantee you its not what you think it is
Start with autocrossing, Leave the car bone stock and attend this school after half a season http://www.evolution.com/autocross - oh yeah ask for lots of help at your events.

What you you mean exactly? When I said roadracing I mean circuit racing. Also I definately understand that the driver is the most important, and I plan on definately improving the situation and be the best as I can be. I was just wondering if the car itself was a good platform to build on or if it was a waste of money. Thanks for the replies guys.
Well you're going to have to do some driving schools before you start 'circuit racing' (i still think you have a poor understanding of what road racing is, and how much time/money it consumes) which you can do in a bone stock car with good tread on the tires and a fresh set of brake pads.

I understand that this is a very expensive hobby, and I'm definately not going to do it blindly. I am aware of all the costs. RJ where can I go to understand what road racing is all about?

I love my 93 Civic Coupe DX. It's pretty fast as well... At least I think so!
10.5 years with the car and I still enjoy driving it each time I autocross.

The only place you can go to figure out about how these events work is the events themselves.
Take your stock car to a local autocross, find the first person that looks like they know what they are doing, and ask them to help you out.
Find the closest race course, look up the regional schedule, and attend an event. Find someone who looks like he's doing everything himself and ask if he needs a hand. Most road racers will welcome free crew in exchange for teaching you a little about the sport.

Talk to solo-x. His car is a monster (not sure if it's a DX or an EX, though). His trophies speak for the car's abilties (of course, his abilities help a bit
)
[edit] keep in mind that you can auto-x anything. In the end, your driving skills will be what matters most. The wisest thing you could do is get a good set of shocks (and maybe some 205/60-13 tires) and just race the thing in stock class. Build your skill from there, then mod it.
Good luck.
