03 si performance question and a story
well here's the deal, i'm new to owning the civic but not new to owning honda's. i've owned 2 integra type r's, 3 gsr's and 1 03 accord. i like my new si alot but the fact that redline is at 6800 and fuel shut off is at 7100rpm is killing me. it seems like as soon as the fun get's going you have to shift. i don't street race much any more but i'll mess around a little with another here and there. today on my way home from work i was on the highway next to my friend with a 98 intergra gsr and he was behind me on a on ramp to a highway and i look into my rear view and i saw him drop it so i do the same into third. i took it 7k and shifted into 4th he caught right up to me cut into the left lane and kept on pulling and pulling and pulling away from me. i took my car up to about 110 and said screw it, i couldn't catch him. so my question is what gives? i never thought i would get my butt kicked that bad by a gsr that just has a short ram intake, by the way that's all i have too. i'm 28 years old and have owned so many sports car's it's not funny so i know it's NOT me as a driver. when ever my friends and i go to the track they always have my run there cars because i end up getting the best times. so i'm just looking for a little insight here to see what you other si owners have to say and is there a way to get my max rpm raised and gain hp? well that's it for now, thanks
Well i would say your correct about it feeling like its gunna pull like a champ and then you have to shift... Same feeling here! Hondata will solve that problem for you. A little pricey but well worth it, from what ive seen and read. As for the gsr vs ep3... it will pull you top end boltons vs boltons. I would even say atleast half if not more, b16 will pull you top end bolts vs boltons. There is alot of unharnessed power in the new K series' motors. But it is stuck in the computer. Ie Hondata being so helpful. But now I JUST read in SCC, that they put a type s head on and it was 171 whp. pretty good, and with a hondata im seeing low 14's easy! Id say they are better motors without internals if you have a hondata and boltons, but as of right now, with internals im going B series. Its a strong motor, just need to "harness the Zen"
Well good luck, and I hope you dont lose the love for the EP!

no i haven't given up yet just a little dissapointed. i just want to unleash the beast if you will. how much does the hondata go for? what is a safe redline setting for these engines. i'm so used to the b series engines these new k series are taking some time to get used to. also i thought the gsr and the new si we're pretty close threw the 1/4 mile 15.8 for both so that's why i thought it would of been a close race.

I believe it goes for 595... with the type s head, im sure it can go overs 8k. With just the Hondata, I think its set for 7500 or 7800. The site will let you know all Hondata ?'s. Drasticly helps 0-60. And seriously helps at the track, cause stock or near it you have to shift 4th at the end and it f@#ks you! Anyways, I have intake(short ram off ls), custom made testpipe, resonator removed from stock exhaust, and s@#tty tires. I put down 15.2@almost 91. When I first got the car I went 15.6@86something. So the top end has picked nicely. I see gsrs with some boltons run that all day. Then again I see some with boltons run 14.6. I estimate with exhaust and hondata, ill be 14.6 too. Also if you get Hondata, get the exhaust manifold gasket... A lil help for a lil price. Keep us updated on things turn out.

it sounds like the hondata is the way to go. when you ran your 15.6 was that stock? i'll be purching a greddy evo cat back exhaust in the next week or so, i'm looking for a little deeper sound but not loud and anoying. now the whole test pipe thing, what is that and where can i find that? thanks again.
Any muffler shop can make you a test pipe or you can always goto landspeed racing and get their "racing cat" so it looks like you have one instead of a straight pipe if the cops looks underneath. I had one of those on both of my last 2 Si's and I have a regular straight pipe now on the 1.8T.
No cop is gonna look under your car.... Well I dont know about Cali, I heard those cops f@#k with imports, but anyways... I got my testpipe from http://www.unforgettable.com. Great quality, 2.5 mandrel bent. A lil pricey, but pretty helpful to these cars, IMO.

that's way to funny, well i ordered the evo cat back today and paid $475.00 shipped. i've been searching for the last 2 weeks and that's the best price that i've been able to find. anyways my friend with the gsr has been bragging to the world about yesterday's little run on the highway. he's just happy because he never been able to beat me with any of my other cars so i'll let him have his day of fame but i'll get the lat laugh in the end. next for me in a header, i'm deciding between comptech, dc sports, greddy. anybody have any thoughts on these or reccomend any other header for me? i would like to it be stainless steel if possible. thanks

hpracing has a header for 180 that has good high end ... $180
dcsports is supposedly better for low end torque ... $not 180 lol
Im gonna go hpracing prolly...
also, check out ephatch.com (all about the ep...)

The Hp header is a good call. I have heard many people tell me that the gains are near DC and cost half the price. Ebay has the HP header all the time. It will be under base RSX, but its same part.

Hondata would be a very nice choice. Totally changed the car.

short term i looking for a good header. i would like stainless steel if i can get it. long term i would like to add a jackson racing supercharger. will the hondata ecu work well the the supercharger? the hondata seems like a great idea, i find myself way to quick at redlike and fuel shut off to much. it gets me quite angry, damn short gears. other than that i love my ep3. my greddy evo will be here on monday and i'm getting installed on wednesday i'll post what i think once it's on. thanks again
actually mike your going to get a kick out of this, YES IT WAS. i was comming home from work 1 day and there he was behind me. what gives??? no top end in these ep3's or what? so talk me into the hondata if you think it's worth it

give your car some time to break in.
my car got significantly faster as the miles racked up.
Also, the 17lb wheels on the EP3 are kind of a bummer for top end as well as the relatively high ride hieght (which translates into greater frontal surface area, which hurts 100mph acceleration bigtime despite the relatively aerodynamic shape of the car).
Anyhow, lower the car, get some lighter wheels, give your motor some more time to break in, and you'll be right in the thick of it with the gs-r.
I can run with lightly modified gs-r's with ease. If they downshift first, they pull ever so slightly, and then it stalemates. If i drop first, i pull ever so slightly, then it stalemates.
The speed at which the contest begins is also a big factor. if it starts at 60mph or 85mph the gs-r has a clear advantage b/c it's in 2nd gear v.s. 3rd for the ep, and 3rd gear v.s. 4th for the ep.

thanks, i'm not a big fan of the 02-03 si wheels but i do like the 99-00 si wheels much better. are those wheels any lighter than our wheels? i like factory style wheels. i've been deciding between the 99-00 si wheels or the 94-95 gsr wheels.
the 99-2000 si wheels are about 15lb, so yeah, they're a bit lighter. in fact, most of the OEM honda alloy wheels are typically around 15lb. I have no idea why the 2002 si wheels are such pork barrells at 17. Either way, I dropped 28lb from my car just by going to some 10lb wheels.

I feel ya on the weight savings but 15" is too small IMHO for an Ep (daily driving). 16" seems about perfect for street use. You did pick nice wheels though, I was thinking of those on my last Si.
