Default cleaning rims

well i searched around, and no one seems to be talking about this. But i was just curious if there is a correct way to wash your rims? I noticed my rims have gotten rather dark from the brake dust. Will leaving the brake dust on your rims destroy them?

My room left brake dust on his chrome wheels(he drives a legend, bling-bling) for about 3 mths. The combination of dust and weather ate away some of the chrome. It left these rust spots all over them. So im guessing that on any finish it will do the same. Just wash them every so often with the same car wash soap you use to wash your car like the last guy said.
