lol. You run rich from the factory. FAIRLY rich, not just a little bit.
Also, i believe the popping you hear has to do with a change in exhaust velocity and how that affects the flow in more free-flowing (and louder) exhausts.

I'll repeat myself since you ask a question, reply after I post, but don't bother to read.

back fire
2f2f !! make it more richer and you could see some fires coming from your exhuast... hahaa
who needs a lighter to light a smoke when you have big exhuast..

I think it's normal with an aftermarket N1 exhaust. Like Chris N said, our cars run rich from the factory. I don't have an R, but I get that popping sound when off throttle on my SI with APEXi N1 catback..
I have the fujitsubo rm-01a, and it pops when I let off the throttle too.
Its not really a pop, but like a disturbance in the air, like a water bubble in a straw.
I've heard this gurgle/air bubble/pop in almost every aftermarket exhaust on any honda. I do not think it is Apexi N1 specific, and I think it has everything to do with running rich.

Maybe Dave (smsp) can confirm this, but think about why it's called a "MUFFler" to begin with... hmmm. When you go and replace the real muffler with this hole of a can straight-through exhaust pipe... well, no more "muff'l'ing," lol. These cans aren't mufflers, they're just a fancy t00b. I think they have material in the walls of the can to help with general noise a little, but not really. The muffler serves a purpose, quieting the exhaust, and one of the things it helps quiet is that backfiring sound when letting off the throttle (so does the resonator). So unless the muffler actually has multiple chambers and piping to "muff" the sound, it's going to pop occasionally (on top of buzz and be loud).
someone correct me if I'm way off here

I thought it was because the hot air coming out of the exhaust is meeting the cooler air from outside when you let off the gas. The result is a popping sound. I get the same sound with my mugen twin-loop.

I've got a bridge to sell you.....

it was once explained to me that the air rushing out gets sucked back in when a shift or sudden drop of rpm's occurs. Then when the revs jump back up i.e. the clutch is reengaged the air rushes out again hitting the air that was briefly being sucked in and they make a pop when they collide. I have gottened quite skilled at making it pop and I always do it next to people with their windows down. Me and my friends call it a car fart.

Thats what I always believed as well. The N1 just allows you to hear everything thats going on... and allows all of your neighbors to hear it too.

I am pretty sure it happens when you have oem injectors. the injectors dont fully close, and they let out some fuel that then make that sound.
if you switch to aftermarket injectors, most all of them dont do that
i havent heard any hondas with aftermarket injectors make that sound like you are talking about

question...if our cars run so rich, cant i just get a SFC type thing and turn down my fuel, or turn down the pressure with a FPR and get better gas mileage? Is that bad for the car?
So what then, do aftermarket injecotrs just compeltewly stop delivering fuel when your off the throttle. That seems a bit odd and impossible if the motor is still running. Must haev fuel to ignite air to turna crank. I think all injectors "leak" fuel when yor off the throttle. It is called idling. Maybe we are just misunderstanding each other.
My 2.5" downpipe, stock centre and 3" HKS Hiper pops when I let of the throttle but not always. I also got aftermarket 500cc injectors...
