Default Extremely bad gas mileage!

I've been reading about other people's gas mileage on this board, and its a average 250 a tank to 300. I get 200 if i'm lucky (if i keep it under 4000 rpm and no racing)! The lowest i had was probably 160 and highest is 218. I have a '96 LS w/ 68,000 miles.
I bought one of those rip-off Tornado's from infomercials and i haven't done any mods on my engine whatsoever. Does anyone know how i can get more gas mileage? I'm so jealous of everyone who gets good mileage. I bought the car used, so maybe they broke in the engine wrong? What can i do to fix this?

Start with the basics...air filter, spark plugs, plug wires, fuel filters...if they are dirty you can get a bad gas mileage. And yep I hope you took that tornado crap off.

EDIT: Any mods on this car?

Nope, no mods. I'm planning on getting a AEM CAI. I'm just working on the exterior right now before the engine.

It could be number of things...even your o2 sensor but if it's a stock 96 teg...you should be getting that 300 miles or so. Filter, plugs & wires would be the first thing I'd check & make sure your tires are inflated correctly.

I thought I got bad gas mileage until I drove until the gas light came on about 10 times... I was getting about 250 and I was at 310 when I chickened out and went to the gas station.

I though I was having a problem too. I just started shifting at about 3000rpms, and it helped alot. Also, don't go to the station when the light comes on. You can still get at least 60 more miles off the tank. I found out from the dealership that once you hit the 1/2 tank mark the needle never stays where it's supposed to. It changes all the time, and it really isn't out of gas when it hits the Empty for the first 50 or so miles. I hope that makes sense.
