Default Vtec to Vtec, or not Vtec to Vtec, that is the question

Ok quick question. Today me and my boy raced for shitz and gigles, btw he has a '02 Ex with an intake. I beat him,...badly but thats not whats important. Sometimes when shifting from first to second while racing, I dont always drop into Vtec right away, but when shifting from 2nd to third it always falls in nicely. What is the cause of this? Is it me? Am I shifting too fast, too slow? Any comments more than welcome.

well if you mean the rpms are below vtec engagement point, then your not shifting quick enough and keeping the rpms up. . but if you shift and land at 6k and vtec doesnt kick in till a little later, then you might have another issue.

you gotta shift quicker but be careful not to miss. the way the tranny is, the throw from 1-2nd is a lot longer than say 2-3th or 3-4th. Just gets better with practice : ) you just gotta push your self and shift better.

Also depending on the condition and the load on the engine, vtec might not fully engauge during the fast reving 1st gear.
