Default About VTEC...

The other day I let a guy with a Mustang GT drive my R. He really loved it of course! But, during the drive, he asked me what VTEC was. Well, I don't know much about it, so I just told him it was really to hard to explain. I know I will probably get flammed for this, but my questions are:

1. When was the first VTEC motor introduced and on what car?

2. What exactly is VTEC?

Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it!

I think the first VTEC was on the NSX in 1990 or so.

loosely described, VTEC is a switchover from a smaller cam to a bigger cam at a certain rpm to maximize low-end tractability and high-end hp in a smaller-displacement engine. For people who are not engine nuts, this explanation usually works. What kind of car did you own before the R? I also drive a Mustang GT on occasion.

well here it goes... I'm not very technical b/c hey lets face it I didn't go to college to become a mechanic. But after a certain number of rpms (5700@WOT) our second runners open up and let the engine take in more are thus making the car haul *** and burning shitload of gas at the same time. VTEC = variable timing electronic control(?) i think is what it means. don't worry about the technological parts of vtec just drive it hard and enjoy the ride.

Nope. Cam lobes, not intake runners.
