Default clicking in dash

just tonight I got a kind of clicking pumping sound behind my dash, sounds like its towards the left side. it's only when i turn the key to the on position, it goes away when i start the motor.
anyone have any idea to what it could be?

i don't think its the main relay, after looking at it more this morning i think its coming from the middle of the dash. Its really loud, and like I said its only when key is in the on position and the engine is off. it just started last night too.

if it's not the main relay it has to be one of the other relays. it's most likely coming from one of the relays that are on the same bracket.

I'm pretty sure you're a trial user until the end of a 1-month period.

ok, this sucks, i just bought a main relay from the junkyard, it worked for two starts, then quit. then i got a new one from honda, guess what, it doesn't work. I just get the repeated loud clicking. What could cause the main relay to click like this? bad fuel pump? any suggestions?

It's not your main relay, its a ground. Your relay is grounding out. You need to check the relay ground and also under the hood. I had this problem with my 88CRX Si. I first spliced into the ground for the main relay and it was still acting up. Later when my car died, I found that the ground attached to my thermostat housing was unbolted. Check all your grounds under the hood and that should solve your problem. For some reason everytime someone hears a clicking sound they scream main relay. It's not always the case.

i had the exact same problem with a loose battery ground wire once. i think an almost dead battery (near 0 charge) can cause this also.

thanks guys, i feel like an idiot now, I had checked the underdash fuse box, found a broken fuse and replaced it, but I never looked at the fuse box under the hood. found one there too. I replaced them both with 5 amp higher fuses cause thats all I had around. is this a good idea? what would cause the fuses to blow in the first place? a bad relay?

wait wait wait, i have a 88 standard base model hatch that got sotlen and now it wont crank at all, and my main relay clicks loud too, i have about 3 or 4 different ones for extra's. the starter dont get a signal at all. Here is what ive replaced so far: starter, underdash fusebox, underhood fuse box, ignition switch, fuses, ecu, injector wiring harness, main relay, and all pother relays. Ive also wired the starter solenoid DIRECTLY to the ignition switch where it iz normally at, but still nothing. The car runs if you push start it, and when you try to crank the motor when its already running, nuthing. The ignition switch turns off the motor but not on HELP

the purpose of fuses are to be a sacrificial element in a circuit should something go wrong. as with boats, they use zinc as a sacrifical metal to prevent rust on props and the like, the fuse is designed to blow at a certain amperage to prevent further damage to other electrical components. hence, by using larger fuses, that threshold has now been raised and damage 'could' possibly occur if something shorts, but not necessarily. i'd be looking to replace them with the right ampere fuses asap.

By the way>>>when is my trial user status up?

strange, i'd recommend going and seeing an auto electrician, if you want to do the work yourself, get them to do a quote on it and diagnose the problem for you so you know what to attack. almost smells like an altenator/starter motor problem to me, but thats just a guess.
