Default koni yellow question

what comes with koni yellows? i recently purchased used yellows for my 4th gen prelude and was unable to install them due to missing bushings (stock ones are too small)... anyway.. help me complete the list
4 koni yellow struts
8 lock nuts
4 12 mil bushings (stock is 10)...
4 stock top mount (with assorted rubber goodies)
4 bump stops

4 dust boot - apparently not needed with konis

anything else? i know i can get the bushings machined to 12mm, but is there anything else i should use from the stock suspension... if someone could scan the instructions id appreciate it.. cuz i cant find them anywhere on the net... thanks in advance

Most Honda upper mounts have a metal collar that slides inside of the bushings. Your shocks should have come with replacement collars. The ones Konis supplies are too small so you have ream them out on a drill press. I can look up the drill bit size but I can't remember off hand. Luckily I had access to a drill press. On my 3rd gen the rear upper shock mount was a one piece unit. That is, bushing in the upper mount is formed around the metal collar or sleeve and the rubber bushing material is molded inside the upper mount. This should not be the case on your car though. I think each upper mount consists of a top and bottom bushing with a free floating metal sleeve in the middle. You "may" be able to ream out that factory sleeve. However, I think it is pretty damn thin. The Koni ones are nice to have because even though they are a little bit too small (inside diameter) to slide over the Koni shock, you only need to ream them out a tiny bit. (Please don't ask me why Koni supplies the wrong damn size collar to slide over their own damn shock shaft!!)

This will make sense when you disassemble your suspension. Just pop the bushings out of one of your front upper mounts and you will see that collar. See if Koni will send you a set of collars or just try to ream out your stock ones so that they will slide over the larger diameter Koni shaft. That's it!

i diassembled one of my front shocks and thats how i figured out i have a problem... so i know what collar your talking about... what exactly is the function of that collar? so that the there is no rubbing on the rubber bushings? can i do without it... ya it is pretty thin... i wonder if its machinable... frick

The Konis do not include bumpstops, top mounts or dust covers. You reuse the stock ones. For the bumpstops, you can trim them if your car will be lower than stock. They do not include top mounts. You reuse the stock top mounts and you have to press out the stock 10mm metal sleeve in the rubber bushings and press in the Koni 12mm metal sleeves. The stock dustcovers can be reused as well. You need to drill out the top wash in the stock dust boot to 12mm so that it will fit over the Koni shaft. I would recommend using them to keep most gunk out, but you do not have to use the dust boots.

ya.. i heard that the dust covers arent generally needed for konis...

so sleeve is the same thing as the collar right.. very thin metal tube... is it needed so that there is no wear on the rubber bushings? i never got the 12mm sleeves.. where can i pick some up? just from koni? what a pain... i should have just bought new

Yeah, you definitely need those little metal collars. The bushings will get shredded otherwise. Try giving Koni a call. I bet you could find something like them on the net if Koni won't sell you some. I looked at Home Depot but they did not have the right size. Just make sure the outer diameter is correct and you could cut it and ream it to get it the right size. I would bug Koni until they sold me some though. http://koni-na.com
