Stock 89-91 Civic Si. Great for Stock, STS, and CSP - 4 seats so practical for daily use and can carry your gear to the track.

If you're stubborn, read the next bit, if not, read the last sentence.

Jonathan Roberts is selling his nationally competitive E-stock MR2 for ~8500 IIRC. Comes will all extras. Just get in, learn to drive, win. It's that easy

I agree with all other responses so far.

Now you guys aren't reading his question... He wants the best autocross car he can do a swap into. From that, we must assume he doesn't care if he's compeditive in any particular class or not, so why waste Jonathan's car on him?

Do you want slicks too?

r2x ~ who's having fun with the auto-x n00bs, and is hoping to get called "really stupid" in this thread as well.

I'm looking for an 89-91 Civic Si, or a 90-91 Civic EX. Of course the 88-91 CRX will always rock. Consider the extra weight with a B18 swap. I went ZC with my CRX DX and was far ahead of the B16 A CRX at this past weekends autoX school. The drawback with the CRX is that it's not allowed in alot of classes. The B18 will put you in a modified class, just take your pick, SM or SM2 and get a body. CRX is SM2, Civic is SM. Still gotta learn to drive it though.

A GSR can be competitive in any class mostly - GS, DSP, STS, STX

Keep it stock and learn how to drive

Have you considered that the best car to get for under 5k may not be a honda? If it's not going to be your daily driver because you need a backseat or more trunk-space, I'd consider something like an MR2 or a Miata. They have lots of aftermarket support if you choose to advance your class beyond stock, and both are really fun cars to drive unmodified.

If you want to swap in a B18c5, you might as well pick the lightest car possible. For SCCA that motor will put any car but a typeR in SM, SM2, or DM. If $5g is your car cost limit plus the motor swap, you'll get stomped in autocross and have a car that I as an instructor would not get into on the track. Adding that motor without suspension, brakes, and wheels and tires will make a car that goes great but can't stop or corner.

If you start with a cheap enough civic or crx, that would leave enough budget to make something that can turn and stop too.

Your last post sounds like you just want another gsr, so get one if that's what you want. I run mine in dsp and have plenty of fun and can annoy M3's and Porsches on track in schools.

If you really want a car for autox and track fun, figure out a real budget for the car, motor, suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, saftey equipment then double it, then remember entry fees, hotels, gas, tolls, food, new tires, new brakes, broken stuff. The more modified the car, the more broken stuff and the more it costs.

It's better to start with a simple, basically cheap and fairly stock car and build it up as your skills increase. Ask any track school instructor how many people they see show up with highly modified cars, don't know how to drive them and either wreck them or never approach the limits of the car.

In the end, get the car YOU want. The people driving the escort wagon in fsp yesterday were having a hoot. I've seen a YUGO running in ep in the northeast, and they were having fun too. A gsr is ok in stock class, pretty good in sts, can be made competitive in dsp, could do ok in sm.

Probably not a good comparison for the two engines as that was my first AutoX experience.

If I finished 4 seconds slower than an experienced AutoX driver (and a good driver at that) in my first AutoX, I can't wait for my times in a year from now with the B16b engine.

I do agree with Mark that the CRX rocks. The CRX was a blast to drive.

Now to get those times down.

No flaming intended... I'm sure I'm not the only one who is a bit confused. Please give us more info so we can better address your concerns:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by DroppedGSR &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I want something that can handle and hang with the best on the turns!</TD></TR></TABLE>

At an autocross? As in, a one-at-a-time, time-trial against the clock on a course marked by cones in a parking lot, on an airstrip, etc? How would you know if it was "hanging with the best" if it's one at a time? Or do you mean for raw times, by class, by overall, or by PAX Index adjustment? Literally a $5k used shifter kart would destroy everything else, in the turns or on the few short straights... but it's really hard to say when it's for overall times and split-times during each section of the autocross course are not given. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the question?

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by DroppedGSR &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">what do you guys think can i fix that up well enough to be a nice track car? this will not be my daily driver i have an 02 trailblazer on 22s to drive every day</TD></TR></TABLE>

Do you mean "track" as in road course for lapping days and high performance driving schools, or autocross (as you stated in your initial post, as well as the thread title) ? And are you towing, or driving it to and from events, i.e. is this still going to be a street legal car? (If towing, please check the load ratings for your 22's and the tires on them, make sure they can handle the additional weight of towing...)

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by DroppedGSR &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i want to have fun with it, nothing real special, i want it to look good and be competetive but not necesarily the best</TD></TR></TABLE>

Locally, regionally, or nationally competitive? What kind of autocrossing are you planning to do- local stuff, bigger events, or the SCCA Nationals in Topeka each fall? Again, do you mean autocross (parking lot time trials) or road course lapping days (in which case "competitive" means nothing, it's not for times or trophies...)

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by DroppedGSR &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I guess you could say i just want something that can handle with the best of them, and due to my past experience i may just get another GSR...Would that be a nice autox if done properly? IF it wont be worth 2 ***** on the track i dont want it that is why i am asking everyone else</TD></TR></TABLE>

A GSR could indeed be "the fury" if prepared well and driven correctly. But, again I must ask... do you mean "track" or do you mean "autox" ???

Not flaming at all, just looking for clarification so we can help more...

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Default Re: What car to get for AUTOX??? (getfast)

I have a '92 Civic CX, B18C1 swap, I/H/E, ITR shocks/rear LCAs with Ground Controls (Integra spring rates). Nothing too special, but the car is pretty fast at the AutoX. This is my 4th year AutoXing and the first two years I raced a bone stock '00 ITR (which I won my class both years).

My initial thoughts now at this point with my hatch is that the car feels good, but not what I was hoping. I feel I should be very close to FTD with it and that's just not happening for me. Not trying to sound cocky, but I think the car should be faster. There are a few things that I think could help me be more competitve with it. For one, a better suspension than what I have (full coilover setup). Front/rear strut bars and front/rear sway bars as well. A LSD would help for sure. I still haven't decided if I need to go to a smaller wheel/tire combo yet. The lack of power steering has hindered me a little with steering response on race tires.

Overall, a bone stock car on street tires would be best to learn on. Either way, mod the car at your leisure, but I would recommend staying on street tires for your first season at least to learn the characteristics of racing. Think of it this way, tires squealing and giving you feedback is very important for a new AutoX'er. Once you switch to sticky tires, most of them dont' give you feedback.

Good luck either way man.

No, build an A Mod car using a B18C5 Type Arrrr motor... that would be the ulitmate vehicle to hang with the best in the curves. Of course a Mechanical Engineering degree and Aeronautical Engineering degree would probably be required to build an A Mod car which could dominate the class...

If I were to get another vehicle sole for autocrossing instead of building up my integra then it would be either a 2nd Generation RX7, Datsun 280Z, or Nissan 240SX (just to have modern fuel injection instead of the mess of wiring the 280Z has) ...
