Default While Driving I hit a Deep *** pot hole and suddenly...

My engine just cut off. RPM and the miles both drop to zero. Gas pedal didnt' work. I hit the pothole going around 40 mph because I didnt' see it. It scared the hell out of me; I hit my hazard and drifted to the emergency lane. Well on the side of the road, I took out the key and restarted the car and it operated like normal again.
I drive a 98 automatic civic lx. Is there a reason the engine cut off?

The car is designed to shut down in a crash. Maybe the shock was so hard that the car thought you crashed so it shut down.

Yea, but I'm surprise the airbag didnt' go off, if the shock was hard enough for the car to turn off.

I think you must've jarred the crank position sensor for a second, and the engine stopped running. the distributor seems like it could jump a little, so i say either a cam position sensor, or the crank angle position sensor, etc. etc. if i was you, just to be on the safe side, i'd do a 5-speed tranny conversion, mounted to a B18. just my .02

I love new orleans. We either #1 or #2 for worst roads in the U.S.

Holes everywhere.

My parents live in Nola. I can't imagine having my civic down there. Sidewalks are just as bad, I go for a run, come back with 3 broken ankles.

Both of my boys air bags went off when he hit a huge pot hole with his 95 del sol here in Boston, MA. Anyone from Boston knows that the streets are horrible.

potholes **** me off....especially the ones that the city doesnt take care of for like weeks on end!

Ever wonder why the potholes on major streets take so long to get fixed??

Isnt the city suppose to cover all expenses regarding such things???

hahah thats great..top 10 in a large group is something to smile about.

but yeh is it possible to sue the city for damages to your car?

IMO it could be possible if you keep records of the pothole (ie. how long its been there, pictures of it etc.).

My baby fell victim to a few KILLER potholes in the past (thankfully the worst result of it was a blown tire! a toyo T1-S to be exact ). Im usually aware of the ones around my regular routes but its likely that you will still run into one somewhere else!

I ride with my seat really close up to the wheel so I get better clutch action. Side effect is my legs are always bent upwards. Right after I got my 98 civic I was coming home and hit the pothole right outside our driveway and the car cut off...

realized that my knee hit the keys dangling from the keyring and I hit them hard enough with my knee that when they swung it pulled the ignition key out of the run position

you might have been jarred enough when you hit the pothole that this could have happened...

very reasonable cause. I've had something similar happen. I turned the car off and back on b/c my knee hit the key.
