Default Car overheats in stop and go traffic...

I just replaced my coolant, thermostat, and had my a/c system checked and my car STILL starts to overheat whenever I am sitting in traffic at idle with the a/c on. I also noticed that the second fan(the one close to the battery) isn't coming on. Any help? I'm leaving for Phoenix, tomorrow from Kansas...need to make sure I'll be ok.

how long has it been overheating for?
you might need a new radiator or a new engine
good luck

Possible radiator, lightly touch the fins and see if they basically fall apart or are a different color. Do you have your heatshield on your exaust manifold? If sitting there without one, it will heatsoak your rad.

Ok, here's some more specifics, I was driving around most of the day with the A/C on, car was fine, but after a while, the gauge would slowly start to go up, now driving around normally as long as I was moving, it was fine, and it does fine on the highway. I'm just wondering if it's not the fan, but I can't find which fuse it is.

Mine does the same thing. It's fine while the car is moving, but if I have to sit for more than 5 minutes, it starts to overheat. I think my water pump is going bad. It drips sometimes from right above the alternator(if that's what the dripping means).

sounds like a water pump to me & that's only a $14 part

I don't have time to fix it, do you think it'll be ok driving to PHX? I mean it's not dripping coolant or anything, and I did some more checking, and my fuses are all good, basically it's just the radiator fan won't come on.

yes you do, you also have to pull off the timing belt.. but if you are overheating do you really think its a good idea to head to Az in the summer none the less with out fixing it...

well if ur fan isn't coming on then thats why its over heating. Your fans only come on when your car isn't moving. So if they don't come on then it will over heat.

one fan does, the other doesn't, can't figure out why...and this only happens very seldom...usually I'll just turn off the a/c for a bit and it'll cool down...

oh yeah in case i didn't say this before...the overheating thing ONLY happens when the a/c is on.

its the fan dude... one is for a/c and other is for regular running when it gets to a certian temp.. Needs a new radiator fan... Let the car warm up all the way to normal and wait to see if the fan comes on or not.. if it doesnt come on after 10 mins of normal temp running at idle u deff need a new one.. Could be a bad connection too though or maybe a fuse.. deff a fan problem if its only doin it at idle...

Did you do the work yourself? if so, did you bleed the cooling system after refilling to get all of the air out? My heat guage used to go up when i would sit somewhere because i forgot to bleed the system when i changed my radiator and thermostat.

Yes I did bleed the system, it said to do it until no more bubbles, I let the vent open for a while, and it would run out steadily, and then every once and a while, it would get a little air bubble, is that right? or should I let it go for a long time to bleed all the air out? Also, how did you hook up a toggle switch? was it hard?

ok its def. ur fan, ur fans not coming on, ur not leaking any thing. and u only over heat when ur not moving, u have 2 choices hook the fan up to a switch, (very easy) or hook it up to an inition 12v, which just comes on wth ur car, and the car allways stays cool, all u have to do eighter way i pull the wires off the fan and put them where u need them, test the fan first, hook it up to ur battery to make sure it starts, cause if u go though all the trouble and it doesnt work ur gunna be mad.
good luck

what he's saying is most likely the issue. Splice into the fan wire and run a wire from your battery to give her some juice. If the fan comes on it's good if not you need a new fan motor.

If the fan comes on then it might be the sensor on the rear of your engine that sends the signal to the fan for it to start running.

Always rule out the easy little things before you go replacing water pumps.

water pumps are 14 bux?? where. id like to know.

i have a b16a1 in mine. wit NO fans period. and it never goes past the 3/8 mark on the gauge. i live in san diego too. hot as hell durin the summer.
water pump is brand new, radiator is flushed every 6 months wit the heater core checked out too. As a clogged heater will halter cooling more than u think. no exhaust shield. and it never gits too high.

id flush teh cooling system. change the oil. and have the heater core checked.
driving in 100 degree weather never gits over the 2/8 mark on my temp gauge.
i run distilled water and a form of water wetter ig ot from kragen. same basis as water wetter.

its a full size radiator by the way. i think all crx came with full ones right???

and how is it overheating? like actual steaming out and overflowing?? or jus the gauge going way high?

my water pump was $14 @ autozone. my fans were working & everything else checked out, but my car would overheat at a stop-if I was moving it was cool. I changed the water pump & viola-no more overheating.

I'll try and check those wires tomorrow before I leave...even if I can't get the fan working before I get to PHX, I can always do it once I get there...driving there won't be a problem, it's all highway, and the condensor fan still comes on, and cycles off like it should. Thanks everyone.
