Gotcha Chad.
Anyone else have a problem with their forum just kind of going non-responsive? Top page loads fine, everything else once clicked on, goes off into the weeds for me.

Hey guys, I appreciate & I am sure the others do too, the discussion going on on the nasaforums site. Like Chad said, weigh in with your opinion. Many people asked for their voice to be heard. That is the place.

a lot of brain-dead web apps try to track sessions by ip address, which breaks if there is a proxy involved. If this is the case, its broken for all 38 million aol users.
I'll have a look at it this afternoon. If this is the case I will have our web services people contact them and see if we can get it fixed. Given the attitude ryan showed here I'm not sure if he cares if 38 million aol members can use it or not.
quick fix: use an external web browser rather than the using IE from inside the aol client. see if that works. if the problem is using ip for session mgmt it will.

You're utilizing the same software (IE)... its not any faster.

Wouldn't you recieve this benefit from any browser connected to AOL? With either browser (inside or outside AOL's client application) the user types an address, which AOL's DNS tries to resolve (and uses the VA cache if available). Unless there is some tricky redirection involved in the AOL browser (which is very possible).

I was quite intrigued by what you had to say, so I investigated a little more..

After reading the first few links provided, I hope my ISP does _NOT_ try to emulate these features..
On a dynamic content site, like a discussion board, do you really want a stale, cached page anyway?
It seems to me you might well be better off perusing the boards outside of AOL's compression and caching routines. I speak somewhat from ignorance, though, since I've never used AOL extensively. I do know that getting stale pages from the caching server at work ticks me off occasionally.
Oh well.. sorry for O/T

backbone servers/routers already do this, especially with overseas sites.
They are smart enough to know when a page has been updated since cached.

only if you configure the aol web cache as the proxy server for that web browser. By default most web browsers dont configure a proxy server. You also need to have an aol session open to access the aol cache from an external browser.
Using IP address to maintain session context is broken, according to both the W3C and the IETF. It breaks whenever a proxy server is used and it can also lead to "interesting" behavior when address translation is in use. The correct method is to use cookies either in the url or in the headers to maintain session state.
http://webmaster.info.aol.com/ has all the info about aol web access that web developers need to know

All of the big ones (earthlink, etc) are TRYING to emulate these features. Some of them even charge extra for this. Caching and compression work. In fact, its about the only way to make the web scale.
If you are getting stale pages from a web cache, either the web site or the web cache is broken. This may come as a surprise to some of you, but there's a lot of buggy software in the world.

I don't know why, but that made me laugh out loud. Oh wait, it's probably because I write some of that software.
