b16 setup in CRX: I have a clunking noise over rough road, pass. side
I've had my b16 swap for over a year now, I've autocrossed it many times and done a few lapping days and everything holds up strong and dependable.
BUT,
For a long while now (I just ignored it) there's been a clunking noise or rattling noise like unfirm parts are knocking around with eachother when I drive over rough road (or small potholes and what not). Noise doesn't exist under heavy acceleration or decel.
I have checked the suspension parts and brake parts and shafts and they all seem to bolted down torqued to spec so I'm living with a mystery.
My roomate says last time he's heard noises like that it was a bad strut.
my setup:
b16
YS1 tranny w/ LSD
Poly bushings
Tokico Blue's shocks
Neuspeed springs
Any suggestions? This is starting to worry me.
I appreciate any and all help ahead of time.

It feels like it's in the wheel well area of the passenger side up front.
NOT a rattle like a heat shield (don't have heat shields) but more like a clunking but not like a CV joing clunking.
Maybe in the transmission region... I was thinking it may be my LSD but hoping not because my LSD seems to be working great at the track!

Check out your upper A-arms, the bushings go bad up there after awhile that can cause your car to make that kind of rattle. Im taking my car into the shop next week and they are going to go through the entire front end to see whats rattling on my car, i have a suspicion that its a number of things, ill let u know what they find.

I am unfamiliar with the Hub Bearing.. could someone please elaborate?
I'm going to check my Upper Contro Arm bushing and whatnot either Sunday or Monday and see if that's it.
If by HUB bearing you mean wheel bearing... oh god I hope not!

My steering rack is shot. Here's pictures and video:

I've never linked a video from imagestation before so I hope it works.
Anyway, the rattle isn't coming from where my fingers are they are coming from inside the rack. I did not tear the boot, it was torn already (another bummer).
How hard is it to replace a steering rack with the motor in the car (I know it's MUCH easier without a motor in the car!)
I really need all the help I can get with this one... I am about to cry!

The rack is easy to replace. Undo the tierod ends, unbolt the (i believe) 4 bolts on the bottom. And the interior has a clamp (12mm) holding the pinion in place.
The shimmy her out. Depending on your exhaust set up you might have to remove your cat, I had to with my b18c swap.
Good luck.

Also check your radius rod on your pass side to see if it is hitting your tranny. I also have a YS1 tranny in my EF and my stock radius arm was slapping the tranny over large bumps on the pass. side.

I will check that.. but that should be more of a thunk as oppose to a rattle. I think I'm going to call honda and grab a few parts to rebuild my steering rack.
I think what happened was the boot ripped a long time ago and dirt and dust got in there and damaged the bushing that the shaft ran along and now it's bumping up against the inside of the rack. I bet I just need to take the rack apart, take the shaft out, clean everything and replace the RACK GUIDE and the RACK END BUSHING.
I was able to rattle or shake the mainshaft itself within the housing (which I shouldn't be able to do) so I think I just need to replace whatever it is that causing the slack or allowing the shaft to shake.
This will give me a chance to put on new boots and learn about steering rack at the same time!

Dude, I have the EXACT same problem that you were describing - rattling in the front passenger side wheel well. I know it's not the CV join/axle, because it is new. I've checked and rechecked the suspension and bushings, and everything looks okay. I've never played around with the steering rack at all though...
I notice the noise/feel on rough roads, and whenever I turn hard left (steering wheel as far left as possible).
Knowing my luck, I probably have the same cause of the problem, bad rack. lol
Anyway, I know you can buy remanufactured ones at most autoparts stores - it might be cheaper and easier to replace your entire exhisting rack with a re-manned one. They cost like $120 though...

Mr. Todd: I think getting a reman'ed one will be my last option. First I'm going to call every salvage yard within 50 miles and see if I can't steel one off another crx for less than 100$ or so. If I end up doing that I'll just put on new boots and new grease and call it a day. If none of these yards have a crx or steering rack for cheaper than 100$ or so I will look at rebuilding mine.
If I take mine apart and realize that it will cost more to rebuild it (or too long because of ordering parts) THEN I will get a reman'd one.
1: salvage yard
2: rebuild
3: reman'ed rack
4: honda wants 450$ for a new one so SCREW THEM!
I think (HOPE), in a rebuild situation, that I would just need items #'s 10, 2,3 and 16 and of course a new boot. #4 is not applicable for my model.

Are you saying that #10 in this picture caused all of the problems.
If you had the same problem as I do and all that was wrong was #10 I need to know because then it will save me a ton of money just to rebuild it.

thats all it was in mine you might be able to get that part from the dealer if you are lucky. Most dealers wont sell that piece alone..
