Well, for all of you SS owners out there, I'm sure after a while you either become annoyed or begin to despair about your transmission. Especially those of you who have had the tranny fail.
I can now say with confidence that the idea of a transmission swap, despite what many members may tell you, is quite viable, and very satisfying, alternative to the often repeated "sell your car and buy a manual".
I picked up my SS about 2 years ago, because I did not know how to drive a stick, and I really really wanted a prelude. After a year, I was fed up with the way the SS tranny worked, not that I had any mechanical problems, but I just did not like the gearing or the computer. So I began to investigate the various tranny options available.
A couple of months ago I came across a good deal. I purchased a 4th Gen JDM VTEC transmission (M2A4) with medium mileage and in good condition for $500. A short time before that I had located the person who would do the swap for me. Brian, ( prospeed on honda-tech ) works out of Anaheim, which is a stone's throw away from Pomona, so I was all set.
It took a while for all of the parts to come in, and some time for the firewall plate to be fabricated (to reinforce the clutch pedal), but after all is said and done, I am quite happy with the results. There are a few wrinkles that still remain to be ironed out, but they should be fixed soon.
I've driven the car for a few weeks now as a manual and all I can say is, WOW. Aforementioned wrinkles aside, this is a great feeling car. This is definitely the way a prelude was supposed to be, I can't even imagine driving the auto version again.
Anyway, for those of you considering the swap, and in the Southern California area, I know that Brian is interested in doing more of these swaps, so you can discuss that with him directly. He will have to let you know the costs and such, and as I had sort of a prototype deal, I won't discuss that figure.
So, my recommendation to you guys: If you are looking to swap out your auto, Brian at prospeed is the MAN.

Thanks! Yeah it is sooo much better than before. I don't think I'll be able to force myself to drive an auto prelude again.
