Ok I know nothing about bikes...
But I need to find (somewhere) a rear sprocket with tooth count in the mid/high twenties (do they make these?). Needs to work with 520 chain.... Does not matter which bike it is for.
I'm working on a project..

Yeah that doesn't matter for what I am doing. 34 is about the lowest tooth count I can find, I guess that will probably be fine.
http://www.sprocketspecialists...shtml will those work? They are motocross I think, and BTW what kinda project are you working on? A Gixxerkart?
It's not a gixxerkart, but it will have a Ninja 500 engine...
I had planned to put it together a while ago, but then I saw the gixxercart video and decided now was the time.
Hmm. Those look like they might work... but does aluminum wear down quick? Seems like aluminum wouldn't last long on a sprocket.
I did find a 28 tooth rear sprocket on there though, for a Kawasaki KSF-250
MOJAVE... Is that an ATV?

aluminum sprokets are ****..............my friend had one on his bike and after a short time the teeth started breaking off.they are made for race bikes that need less weight and are replaced frequently.also yes i believe the mojave is a 4 wheeler.

I was doing a little research and the 520 chain seems to only be used on the Kaw 500 M/C...is that the only option you have or could you use something else? most bikes use a 525 or 530 and would expand your possiblities greatly.
I have an OEM rear sprocket from my 99 Kawasaki ZX7 that you are welcome to have, but it's for a 525 chain and is more that 20 teeth...let me know if it's something you need, it's just sitting in my garage anyway...
let me know if there's anything else I can help you with

Hmm, I just thought the ninja 500 used a 520 chain. I need whatever works with the stock ninja 16 tooth front sprocket, and the chain to go along with it.
I can replace the front sprocket if necessary to make everything work.
To get the gearing right, I need the largest front sprocket and the smallest rear sprocket... and whatever chain goes with them
I think around a 28-30 tooth rear would work nicely.

From those sprocket people they say that the EX500 uses:
EX-500 87-02 298 42/ 41 33-74 B 42 /45 F 520-104 504K 16 11-17 D
shows 520 chain. Or is this a different EX500? I thought EX500 = Ninja 500...

yes, the EX500 is the Ninja 500...I would probably have to know a little more about the specifics of your setup to help you out though...distances, positioning of sprockets, etc...
Hmm well imagine a go kart like this:
With the entire rear of the kart extended back a foot or so, and this in place of the motor:

Anyone know if there is some way I could run, say, a 428 chain & sprockets? I'd need a front sprocket that fit the ninja 500 motor and took a 428 chain... any ideas?
Do you think 428 chain is too small, i.e. will I break it?

Gixxercart has a clutch. It's on the steering column like all shifter karts.
Here is my kart, just picked it up yesterday:

You can see the clutch handle in this pic:

I might have the sprocket thing figured out, but I would still like to find a front sprocket that fits a 428 chain and will fit the EX500 countershaft.
Any ideas? Is there a 520->428 chain kit for the EX250/500??

you may have trouble finding a 428 front countershaft sprocket that will fit the 500twin. I have the ex500 bike. The bike comes w/ a 520 from the factory and the aftermarket trend is to go with smaller chains down to 520 for streetbikes. Since it already has a 520 chain, there is not real market for a smaller chain kit. There is also no support for increasing the chain pitch to 525 or 530 as far as I know. I believe the 428 is a dirt only pitch but I really have very incomplete knowledge on dirtbikes. Aluminum sprockets will last if they're treated. Untreated rear sprockets tend to wear quickly, especially when the owner fails to properly clean, lube and adjust the drive chain. Also using an old chain with a new sprocket will increase wear.
how much did the frame cost?
Also, are you aware that if you do build it, it can really hurt you?
I have driven a 125cc 2 stroke go cart and I can't imagine more power.

I paid $1200 for the rolling chassis.
My bathtub can really hurt me.
I found a guy that is machining me a 520 sprocket for a 40mm axle. So I think I am good to go

Actually if you get a choice, looks into a 525 setup. You get a lot more grip than the bike does... a lot more shock ia possible. Plus the 525 pitch has every tooth count you can imagine. Also make sure you check those valve clearances!! I'm interested in your transmission/shifter setup. Please do post pics whenever you get around to it. Thanks
