Default obd 2 gs-r's stealable???

me and my friend made a bet. The bet was on if his gs-r is stealable or not i said it was but he say's that it like the prelude and the type r it has a chip of some sort in the key that won't let you start the car unless you have the key is this true.(we betted money on this so if you know about it let me know so i can collect or tell him that i was just joking)

The integra models from 2000 and up have the "chip" you are talking about. It is basically an immobilizer and i believe it works very well since i have one and it has never been stolen. But 2000 models are obd 2.5 so you need to find out the exact year or just take a look at his key. If his key is fat on the end it has immobilizer, if its skinny, then he does not. Tim

speaking of immobilizer, what is the distance for it to work? My car is only about 20 feet from my home. I dont want the car to start just because its in range!!!
So is it only like 2 feet? Anyone know?

Indy

PS- Its not like I have a key to test out this theory. All my keys have the chip in it.

explain your ? a little better? Do you mean the distance that the magnet in the chip will be read from? If that is your ? a VERY short distance. Tim

Yup thats what I meant. If someone were to duplicate your key, it would go in and turn but the car wont start. BUT if your key was also in near the car, it would probably start. So I am hoping that the distance between the chip in the key is only very short....

Any car can get stolen. And you don't need a key to do it.

She's right! If they really want your car they'll tow it or something! And you can disable the immobilizer in the ECU.

Nahh I`m not worried about it getting towed. I live on a dead end street, too quiet and a tow truck cannot even fit here unless you tell the neighbors to move the cars somewhere else.
Besides I know the ECU can get tricked and whatnot. That wasnt my question. My question was only about the distance between the chip in the key and the immobilizer....

I'd think that you'd have to be very close to start it. ie - the key in the ignition.

i've heard of people breaking off the immobilizer part and sticking it under the steering column so a remote starter could be installed. kind of ruins the point of even having the immobilizer, but...

as for the car being stolen, anything can be stolen if someone wanted it bad enough. i had heard people swapping ecu's, but that's just something i hear. itr with immobilizers are stolen pretty easily and common so there must be a way around it

Yes there is a way around the immobilizer, but for the average punk kid, he wont know how to do it.
As for the remote starter, you gotta be pretty damn lazy if you cant just run out and start the car. I mean I know its great for the winter, but you are starting the car for someone to just run in and take it. Besides, ripping out the immobilizer which protects your car, in order to install a remote starter to you deserve to get stolen....well not really...but dont be so lazy ...

hehehe

Why do you ask? Are you trying to steal a GS-R or something? J/K

Ahhh... So i cant get a remote starter for my GSR without ripping out the chip from my key?

BTW people dont get remote starters because they are lazy, its because they want the convenience of their leather not burning them when they get in the car...

Think about it: have the car a/c at the appropriate level, cooling down that hot *** leather before you get in the car... same with winter... cold *** leather to freeze you *** off...

ok..hopefully i can shed some light on this subject. the imobilizer chip HAS to be in the ignition to work. otherwise a small device that holds the key and has a antenna that goes around the key cylinder is needed. the key's signal is only transmitted when the remotestart is powered on. some actualy need a small elctical current to transmit. so if a thief breaks in and turns the ignition on..it still wont start. remote starts are a godsend. i work in a building where my car is a good distance away. i can remote start it at night and have it warm when i get to it...instead of sittin there scraping ice or de snowing it. hehe
