Default Ticking R1 motor norm for Yammys?

I bought my R1 with 6k on it. A little high for the year (2ooo) but alas, I wanted it none the less. So here goes...THe motor is very ticky. I know Yamahas are not really that quiet, but man...I can hear it through my helmet. It happens mostly at 3700 Rpm, but I hear it lower and sometimes higher (if I can hear over the exaust) So, I took it back..they said it was normal. Where I bought it was not a Yamaha dealer, so I went to one..They too said it was normal...But I can hear it through my freekin helmet!!!!!! Some one else with an R1 please advise. Thx.

Since no one else had replied, I'll state that my Yamaha PWC has a noticable TICK. Usualy TICKing indicates valve play or low oil pressure, but in the case of Yamaha, I'm not certain. There is an R1 that parks next to me at work. Maybe I'll find out who rides it and ask them...

you might want to have the valves checked... and in my case a long time ago.. on my ninja.. the cam tensioner was defective and ticked... definately have it taken in and looked at.. you dont want a catastrofic failure at any speed ro distance from home...

your not supposed to have the valves adjusted untill 26000 miles. The bike only has 7k on it. And yes my oil light has come on once. I shut the bike off added a little oil and it was fine. Im not sure. Anyways, the bike was giving me troubles tonight. Everytime I tried to put it into first it would stall. I think the trans is Fucked. Im taking it back tomorrow and telling them to fix it.
Thx for the help.

You're still under warranty, right? If they have to crack it open have them check the clutch too. Your engine oil is also used to lubricate the transmission. With 7K you should NOT have any oil level/pressure problems. Needs looking into. The valves may not need to be adjusted, but the clearances need to be checked.

Just a silly idea, but was your kickstand down? On my bike I can't shift to first with the kickstand down - the engine quits. I didn't know the first few times I started the bike and did my share of cursing before I figured out what was up.

That was the first thing i suspected. I maxed out the clutch adjustment and it drove...mot the best but still drove. So they are fixing it now. i will tell all soon.

I have owned many yamahas and until I sold it my 2000 R1 had 5000 miles on it
It started ticking so ichanged the oil and put redline back in cause it only ticks at high temperatures

Reason it does this is the oil from the factory is not a high enough viscosity
The head on the bike does not allow the valve train to have enough oil surrounding it so when it heats up an\d the oil thins out it will tick, no biggee
Try Redline 5W-30 or 10W-40 I use )W-30 in my gsxr-1000 it will also increase throttle response and it helped my bike with 4th gear wheelies

Thanks for the tip, Ill try it next oil change. Should I just have them do the Valve adjustment? It will be warrantee?!?!? Anyways, they said that the clutch basket needed to be shimed. News to me. Not sure why, I looked at it and the clutches were fine, but it was warrantee, and the bike runs awesome now...so no complaints. They didnt get to fixing the tick cause the motor was hot. So....thats pretty much it. Im still dealing with the tick, the clutch is good, peg wheelies are fun...still cant grasp the 2nd gear wheelie though, only a little, doesnt pull up nearly as much as it does in first. Oh well.

trailer it down there so they can check the valves dood. especially if the check is warranted. Good luck, keep the front end on the ground.

Well, The motor is still ticking. I got the tranny fixed as above mentioned. I changed the weight of the oil but it made no difference. Actually I think it made it louder. Anyways, I am going to try to get the bike to the shop for a free valve adjustment, then I will take it from there. Im not suffering any performance decreases, but its noisy and I can hear it thruogh my helmet so......I will try to fix it.

Still have been riding too much to get her in the shop. Have learned the buety of a Christ, sperman, 2nd gear wheelies etc... though. Still The loud valves concern me, so I will take it up to the shop just after the new month(sept) cause I will have my car registered then.
