A Good Paint Job

Once the car is sanded down and the primer is applied.... how many coats of paint and clearcoat are needed for a good paint job. I'm sure the more the better, but on average how many coats are needed.

3 coats of paint, followed by 3 coats of clear coat.
one of the coats of clear may come off while wetsanding/buffing
