Default How often do you change your spark plugs in your Turbo car?

I am currently running some NGK BKRE something blah blah -11's Iridiums spark plugs.

I haerd that you are suppose to change your plugs more frequently now that your engine is turbo'ed. COnsidering that Iridiums aren't the cheapest in the world, it's rather bad news really. I heard everything from 5000 milies, to 500 miles.

What is normal when running Iridiums? Hell, I had 36000 miles before I changed my spark plugs when my car was stock. No probs. But... if I must change my spark plugs just cause the turbo engine will really reduce that much life out of them, then I guess I have no choice.

thought the Iridiums last forever or something??

I have the BKR7E-11 spark plugs i normally change them every oil change. I am running a JRSC. These plugs run colder than most you buy like you bosch's and one like that so they will wear out faster.

I used to have to change them so often I kept 2 sets in the car and tools, but I ran 150+ psi of fuel pressure... my car would eventually start to miss and I would change them..

I would change them once every track night, and maybee 1000-2000 miles of street driving/racing, or at least once an oil change...

I tried expensive plugs and $.75 plugs and they all seemed the same to me...

Ditch those plugs and go with the cheaper NGK plugs. They work better and are far cheaper. I usually change my plugs @ 5,000 miles depending on how hard of driving i have done on the engine. If I do alot of racing than every 2,000 miles. It really depends if the engine starts missing that is my sign to check and change the plugs.

Where do you guys get the BKR7E-11 Spark Plugs. I assume they are the NGK brand.

that sux, 10? since we only use four, you'll have 2 left over then you'll have to buy another box.
oh well

a question though, what are you guys gapping your plugs at? my instructions for my turbo says start at 35, and if misfire occurs, then go down to 28. stock, no turbo, was at like 42 or something.

You can get the box of 10 from NAPA for under $20.00!

When you people change them out so often (2500 miles), are the plugs that fouled? It just seems like that is an insanely short period of time to have plugs.

yes we change them so ofen because they foul out. You'll know because the car won't run as good.

Advanced autoparts, part #1283. I also keep 2 extra sets with me in my car as well as tools. I change them around every oil change. I also check them once a week to make sure everything is running up to par.

I usually put in new plugs at the track, but normal street driving and boosting i change them out with every oil change. It's only 8 bucks a set.

I checked the advance web site. There is a "1283" NGK plug that sells for $1.60, and ALSO a BKR7E11 plug that sells for $2.99 each (!). There is really no other discription listed... which one?

Because turbo engines run richer. Spark plugs are cheaper then pistons.

I change mine about every 4k miles or every other oil change.

just run the bcpr7es-11, or bkr's either will work. I'm currently runing the bcpr7es-11's rite now but switching to bkr7's because they have a shorter top (porcelain top from the top to the threads is shorter so my plug wires will sit all the way down)

im sure everyone has their opinions but whats the best plug and gap for turbos, i know u guys have already mentioned alot of what you use, but it seems u guys feel the plug isn't as important as how often u swap it. 8 bucks month on plugs seems good but doesn't there have to be more quality in the more expensive plug.<===dumb question

Please excuse my ignorance. However swapping plugs with every oil change sounds like either really cheap plugs or poor tuning. What do people with factory turboes do?

... What do poeple with WRX's do? Do they change their plugs that often as well? Seems kind of freaky when an NA car can go like 15,000 or more miles without so much as any prob with spark plugs.

So you guys are saying that I should ditch the Iridium plugs then? ANd just get some standard NGK plugs that are not Iridium?

What material would standard ones be made of then?
