Default rear suspension/shocks

how do i know if my shocks are bad/dead? perhaps its just that ive been driving the corolla around too much but the wicked loud clank and **** i get when my back wheels go over a bump just cant be normal.

One way I know of is to take the shocks out, flip them upside down and see if the oil inside the shocks comes out. If the oil comes out, their blown.

I think there are ways you can check by pushing down on the car to see if it oscillates for more then 2 oscillations. I am not totally sure about this method, though.
