Paint guys - Help on paint equipment Milano Red
Ok. Heres my story. I had some scratches on my 99 Milano Red Si that were horrible. Basically i had some vinyl on the side of the car which i removed shittily (stupid gf broke up with me and i was upset).
So i basically scratched the finish and a chunk of clearcoat seemed to come off. Anyway, i went to paintscratch.com and ordered cans of spraypaint for the car. Well I didn't read their email and they said to test it out and let them know if it doesn't match. Well i tested out the paint and it didn't match, but we still applied it (i had my moms husband help me who used to paint cars for a living) I know
So anyway, spray cans had orange peel and actually with some sanding and rubbing compound, it didn't come out too bad, but the color isn't a good match.
So being a complete do it yourselfer, i think i can tackle this job. I'm more intested in motor mods, so if it's not PERFECT PERFECT im not gonna be **** about it i guess. This is something i want to learn. I know how to prep the car.
The spray cans were well over $80.00, so this time i'm going to resand the area and paint it again to try and get the color to match. It's not that much, just the door and quarter and rear panels ABOVE the top bodyline (about 2.5" line of paint)
I want to buy equipment for this instead of the spray cans like last time. I want to use PPG paint. For an air compressor, i found this on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...11768 and for a spraygun i was thinking this would do http://www.harborfreight.com/c...=7901 Would this be sufficient?
Last, as far as milano red paint, i was looking at ppgcarpaint.com http://www.ppgcarpaint.com/sea...=mand looking up R-81 milano red.....there are a bunch of shades of milano red!!! How do I know which one to pick? The paint is only $65 bucks for a quart of paint, which i figure will be way more than enough, but i'd like to practice on some stuff. This is the basecoat/clearcoat system, so i assume i'd get two different quarts of paint? Would i be better of going somewhere locally so they can check out my car and get some paint profesionally mixed in a quart so i know exactly what im getting? I would imagine it would be way more expensive though? Anyone ever buy a quart of Milano red paint or any other paint for you honda at your local auto paint store? How much did it run you?
Please no "get it done profesionally" if i had money i would, but i think this would be fun even if i have to pay just as much to get it done profesionally with me buying the equipment.
Thanks,
Kevin

I'm in kinda your situation right now, except I am painting my new body kit. I got my paint professionally matched at a local body shop. Can't wait to start painting this weekend. I would say don't bother with online dealers because they can't see the condition of your paint. Also, there is 7 or 8 different shades of Milano red, making it one of the most difficult colors to match perfectly. Also, it should be r-81- something. That last nu,ber after the dash is the shade of Milano red. Good luck man!!
Amazingly my paint was only $45 a quart because of the shade and what not. I needed two quarts. But I also bought a gravity fed HVLP gun, gun filter, gun psi guage, tack rags, 1200 grit wetordry sand paper, and all the other primers and promoters that I needed to get the paint to stick. hope this helps! And good luck, like that you're going DIY!! Way to save money.
Yeah i built my turbokit from scratch so why not paint my scratches? hehe
Anyway, do you know the pros and cons of the gravity feed gun versus the regular gun? Say the one i was gonna pick out in my original thread?

DIY is cool and can save a lot of money. But if you're not sure on how to do it, you will make things worse and waste money. So here are some tips for you:
Learn how to blend, because there are so many shades of Milano Red that blending will take care of your color matching problems.
You will be buying more stuff than just the base color....e.i, reducers, clear, hardeners, and sometimes blender, flex additives, or flattening agent.
You're paint equipment:
a gravity feed HVLP gun with 1.3-1.4mm tip is most common. These guns require higher CFM's than conventional guns. So you'll have to find an aircompressor that not only has a large tank, but a high CFM rating.
application:
application and preparation should not be overlooked. Learn how to paint first, test on an extra fender or something. Learn how to blend. Clean the area that you are painting in and keep it wet. Wear a painters coverall to prevent dust.
Safety:
Most BB/CC systems contains Isocyanates which requires a FRESH AIR SUPPLIED RESPIRATOR. Some people take the risk and use a 3m charcoal cartridge filter but It's not recommended because it doesnt filter out good enough.
