Default Weight reduction questions and help

I've been reading up all day on T-I about lightweight batteries and removing the sound deadening, now for the questions...

What lightweight battery would you guys recommend? The T1-R one looks nice but says "under 25lbs" which isn't that impressive, but MD said it was 13lbs... but at any rate it's $140, any cheaper alternatives? I don't know jack about batteries, someone I know got a lawnmower one used for $70 that works well, but I don't really know what to look for.

Also I've heard that removing the sound deadening tar takes off about 30lbs, is this consistent with people's experiences? How long did it take, and how much louder is it with the seats and carpeting reinstalled?

I'm also thinking about taking out the A/C, I've heard everything from 20-80lbs for the whole system, seems like the most accurate weight is 40lbs but I just wanted to get some more accurate figures before I decide whether or not it's worth it. Is it difficult to do? Anything fluid freaks me out for some reason.

Was also thinking about replacing my sunroof glass with fiberglass/carbon fiber but I can't find anyone who makes it. Also the Flexite rear window looks interesting, any experiences?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm ready to get rid of some more "fat" this summer! I think I'm gonna sell my 16" C8s and get 15" ones also, about 28-30lbs per corner with tires for the 15"s rather than 36lbs for the 16"s right now.

I removed my complete power steering and AC system and the hoses and cooler are pretty much feather weight type stuff but the pumps are all the weight around 7-10 lbs or so each, something like that.

so your looking at maybe 100 pounds total. 5-10 horsepower would more than cover any advantage that would give you. Now if you could drop maybe 200 pounds then it may be worth it, but then your car won't be very poeple frinedly.

forget losing all that weight, especially if its my daily driven car. I need my luxuries, summers kicking in and my AC got to be on. I dont care if i get a .3 sec off my time, i need my options.

I race autocross though, I'm not just looking for 0.1sec in a 1/4 mile, I couldn't care less about that. In autocross 100lbs would be big (don't care about falling out of any classes because my cams already put me in a high class), and 30lbs off of my wheels and tires would improve handling, acceleration, and braking immensely.

I figure:
15" C8's with tires -25-30lbs of rotating, unsprung weight
Lightweight battery -20-25lbs of weight over the front wheels
Take out sound deadening -30lbs
Take out A/C -30-40lbs?? of weight over the front wheels
*Maybe* flexite rear window -30-40lbs. of very "tall" weight

That's -135-165lbs and the only things that would suck are no A/C (hey I live in Seattle, there are only so many 90-degree days a year), no defroster (who needs to see behind you, just go faster) and it would be a bit louder (but the Type R comes from the factory without this sound deadening, so it can't be all that horrible). Then for the track I can strip out another 120lbs worth of seats, spare/jack, etc, that's 250-300lbs at the track, which is big.

ok here is my list of things i have actually weighed in and what it saved me.

stock header to a greddy header 10 lbs
hood to CF hood 15 lbs
rear seat total 40 lbs w/ belts
pass seat 35 lbs, belts still in
carpet/foamy stuff, 10 lbs
testpipe 5 lbs
spare/jack like 25
PS pump 7-10 lbs (takes resistance off the pully too! i believe around 3.4 hp)
trunk board and carpet 5 lbs
bass tube 15 lbs
misc bolts, speakers, trim, other junk 25lbs
rear panels and pillars 13 lbs
thats all the stuff i have weighed and totals out to 210 not bad, ac is still in though the belt is removed for temp as its starting to get hot i will keep it in since im moving to the desert.

i think i will put this all on my website in a few days and make a link to it in my sig. i will update it as it progresses.

exhaust unknown, prob close to equal or like 5 lbs
tar still in, for now, i hear like 10-15 lbs

Cool, thanks! Yeah I've done some so far:
DC Sports header (-15lbs)
ACT ProLite flywheel (-9.5lbs)
Intake resonators and piping (-8lbs)
Cruise control system (-4.5lbs)
Subwoofer wiring (-4.5lbs)
Mud and door guards (-4lbs)
Rear wiper and motor (-3.5 lbs)
Intake manifold bracket (-2.5 lbs)
Exhaust heat shields (-2 lbs)
Center brake light (-1 lb)
Rear brake dust shields (-1 lb)

Total: 56.5lbs

But I'm looking to do some bigger, more significant stuff. You've heard only 10-15lbs for the tar? I know of a couple guys doing it right now that say 30-35lbs, who knows though. I've stripped my seats/spare/jack but only for the track.

the type r doesnt have a huge fart can on it or hard engine mounts ( i am assuming that if you are that concerned about weight you would have the basics ie hard engine mounts) all that vibration makes for a loud car!

That's what I figured, the ITR is loud but not that loud, should be fine, as soon as I get time I'm doing it.

Actually I've been meaning to do the engine mounts but I've been too lazy/busy. This summer, I should do it!

ok here is actual weight of the tar in my car, a 94 civic ex made by honda of canada(if that makes a dif) but not cdm.

this is weighed in a bag that includes about 90% of the tar in my car, under the front floor mats, rear floors, under front and rear seats, and a little in the trunk. 20lbs. it all depends on which model you have, i have the heavy "luxury" model so its a lot heavier with other stuff too like the sunroof. which reminds me that i will soon be taking on the project of making a carbon fiber sunroof insert, that will hopefully actually function as the original one did(minus the clear part), so it will slide and seal just like the glass one at an estimated 25lbs savings(since the motor and all are still in it). i will make a page on my site about that too when im done.

ok my weight reduction page is up and you can find it here http://www.geocities.com/tek_civic/weight.html

Hmm 20lbs, I think it's more on Integras actually, people have been telling me 30-35lbs, hopefully they're right and the Integras do have more than Civics. Either way I'm starting tomorrow! Where did you find the cf sunroof insert? I wanted to do that too but the only thing I have found is a cf panel that goes over the glass, how stupid is that.... 25lbs off the tallest part of your car would be very nice.

Yeah my huge white resonator box was 5lbs, the lower box was 2lbs and the upper box was 1lb. That's some thick, dense plastic!

ya it is 20 lbs measured, maybe the tegs have more, i have never seen under the carpet of a teg so i can't say. i was actually going to make the carbon fiber insert out of raw CF myself, if i can do it well i might sell them at very minimal profit, but i wopuld need things like the framework of the glass and maybe even the glass itself as a mold or template.

I just took out the sound deadening material from my 95 teg this past weekend and the material under rear seats and rear trunk came out to 8 lbs saved. Remembered this thread and weighed it afterwards hope that helps

Yeah that's how much I've had time to do so far too. I think the heaviest stuff is under the floor and front seats, I felt the rear pass. floor tar and it's pretty thick, at least as thick as under the rear seats (for those who don't know, the tar under the rear seats is about twice as thick as the tar in the trunk).

I've cataloged everything I've removed so far. When I get done removing things I'll post up my findings

If you have a 1997+ Integra, then take that out. Weighs a good 25 lbs or so.

If you are planning on autocrossing, a lot of the stuff you are talking about doing will bump you into a prepared or mod class.

haha wtf is that? And why only on '97+ Integras? I'm interested, but that looks like it's for safety and I'm not touching anything concerning safety!

You need the SAE battery posts (on the right side of the page) along with this battery right? Any idea what the CCA's on this one are? It looks like it's about the same size as stock, do you know if it is?

It weighs in about ~25 lbs or so and it sits underneath the rear seats. I guess it's supposed to keep the rear cabin from caving in.

I think I saw that but I'm not sure.... is at the edge of the rear seat cushion? So it prevents the rear cabin from crushing in an accident? I'd be concerned about it as it's a safety thing, but you say only 97+ Integras have it? Can't be that important then....
