what you guys think VW golf replace my R
i'm thinking of selling my R now (due to money issue), and i'm think to get 2000 VW golf 1.8T GLS, what you guys think of the handling compare to R.
I heard someone say once:
"No need to go to a gay bar, just drive around in your VW and pick up guys"
Im just giving you a hard time, but do you honestly think that would be a wise decision??? I mean if you need to sell the car due to money reasons, i dont think VW repair costs will help out.

If your gonna get a vw be sure to stock up on air flow meters, window regulator parts, shifter linkage parts if you plan on shifting it aggressively at all. And I can go on and on. I hate to say it but I work at a dealership and work on both of them Acura's and VW's and I wouldn't take a VW if it were given to me any of them. If your looking to replace the ITR and nothing will I say look into the EVO the WRX or STI hell even the neon SRT but I don't recommend VW's. HTH

i actually think its a good idea
the 1.8t engine is truely amazing
your car will have a touch of class
and as for handling, the mkIV golfs are one of volkwagens best
dont listen to these guys about the gay crap
im not sure if its gonna help you out in the cost area (edit: for insurance), (unless you go 4door) but thumbs up to a good car

Im afraid the majority of the members, well the educated ones all know that VW is strictly for F A G S.
Djentraced is probably one himself and he is probably using this thread in hopes to try and pick up some more guys.
I actually have a page from a newpaper article which lists the top 10 gay cars, and i think about 5 of them were from VW...what a surprise.
Going from honda reliabilty to VW you will wanna kick yourself, hell shoot yourself after the first month. I also have the consumer report article to back that up. VWs were categorized with all the american cars for bad reliabilty.
so stay smart, and stay with honda

It's not bad changing to Golf if it's the best solution for u. Golf is always a good car. However, in term of performance and handling, I'd pick ITR. I test drove a 1.8T GTI once, it's quite a fast car, however the lag of the turbo is something that turned me off that time. just my opinion, but it's european car...once it rolls, it's pretty damn fast (especially the 1.8Ts)

owe bank 5k CDN and if i sell my car for 28k (2001 with 18k km) CDN and get the VW for 21k i can pay off the bank and feel free again, but i've been looking around for a car that deosnt cost too much but have "close" handling like R, and i gave up, once you ride the R i think nothing in its price range will handle as well as R. i thought the VW golf would be a good idea since it's small and turbo.
well i think now i'll have to test drive one to see if it's worth it or not
but i have a 86 golf as a beater, i've own for 2 years almost and i havent had a problem yet, that's why i thought VW is a pretty good car.
edit: may be if i get VW i'll live longer ! this theft thingy have been bugging me all the time and everytime i park my R outside my brain cells die so fast.

well again all VW can't compare to Integra Type R in handling
1.8T engine just kill your brain cells more in hot days, believe me cuz I experienced it

If $ is such a big issue, I don't think a VW will help. I would get the following cars:
1. CRX
2. 4th Gen Prelude Si
3. RX-7 (from someone that kept them good)
4. MR2s (same as above)
These cars, for fun and handling purposes are equal if not better than ITR once properly used....you may need a couple grand for fix-up here and there, but it will be cheaper than a 21k VW.

Ok so I see you want out (stress) wanna get a car for about 15k U.S.$
I test drove the Golf 1.8T and thought It was slow and handled like crap I also drove a friends 02 Jetta turbo tiptronic and it was a lot better (quick) but it keep braking down on him some of the repairs included short block (cracked) trans.went out too and the ignition coils went out all the time + a lot other cosmetic things and switches(lemon)dealer bought the car back,my advise to you is to go ahead and drive one and see how you like it,but also keep an open mind and check out other cars on that price range there's Nissan's SE-R Toyota celica and the likes.Good luck.

thanks for all the reply.
i think i'll have to deal with 6k debt for bank ! remember it's canadian dollar not US, it's really not a big deal just i would feel better if i dont owe them money.
another reason why i dont to sell my R is a common problem for all the R owner, "theive", i cant leave my R parked anywhere for over hours, and that really kills me.

The only VW I'd replace my R with (and this would have to be by force mind you) would be the Golf R32.

I have many VW friends, have been in lots of their cars (modded and not) and only a few have impressed me at all. And at that, I was only impressed by the straight line acceleration, not by the handling in the least. Plus VW's are boats y0!
