AutoX: What Cones are You Hitting
For those that autox, do you find yourself hitting the same-type of cone (second cone of a slalom, first cone of a sweeper, inside cone of a 180) more than others, or is it pretty random for you?
Hmm Last Auto-x I was at I hit the 2 cones of a crossover... of course I was sliding sideways at the time
I usually hit the second to last cone of a slalom or the first cone after the next gate becase I was a. Not looking ahead, b. really late, c. all of the above.

1) Any cones at the end of a very fast straight/section at top of second... when my ABS kicks in and I have understeer when I need to be turning... "Shoulda done braked earlier".
2) Usually the ones 1/2 way through a slalom as I try to go as straight as possible when I see I'm too far off them.
3) The pesky cone in the chicago box.. you know... the middle one.

These are my favorites! I've been known to hit random cones in a slalom if I havn't driven the car in a while (I forget the the tires stick out an extra 1.5-2 inches).
Not to say I havn't hit other cones too (no cone is truely safe from me!)... I seem to remember a PSCC event last fall in NY where I sent Rodney out chasing about 4-5 cones from one section of the course. I had a little chuckle watching him scramble after all the cones as I crossed the finish line.

Better than hitting all of the red cones
I usually hit the second to last slalom cone since setting up for the exit is usually critical. Or I just take out the finish

I reliably clobber the last cone exiting a chicago box. I hate those things.
I tend to hit some stupid cones too. Something in the middle of a sweeper I'll barely tickle enough to knock it down. Friends will come up to me and ask me how on earth I hit THAT one.
Lots of them when I spin Mom's MR2 around in circles...

I don't have problems with slolam cones - it's the back row of 90 degree turn cones I have obliterated in the past from coming in too hot.... Im not scarring the little orange guys anymore since I'm not blowing the braking zones like I used to and am staying on course in the tight 90 degree turns.
But you know which cones are the best ones to hit - the pointer cones!!!!

the last time i hit some cones was when i hopped in the old ESP Cobra for old times....it's a LOT wider than my STS integra.
usually i smack a bunch of cones after slaloms b/c they've always 'caused my problems and i'm usually behind to the point that i spin at the end

I'm not terribly consistent with hitting a particular cone (although I have gotten really good at hitting the 2nd or 3rd cone in a slalom with my back wheel... Yeah! )... but if it's not IN a slalom and I hit one.... watch out. I'm hitting at least 2 more in the next couple of gates before I gather it up.
the majority of the time i hit the important ones. ie, the ones you _want_ to be close too. occasionally i hit other ones as well, but usually i end up well into the grass by the end of those outings.
fortunately that doesn't happen _too_ often. only about once every 15 runs or so, and it usually stems from a "i think i can go through there flat" mentality. has anyone else noticed i'm always trying to take some section without lifting? i hope that isn't a bad thing....

dang, i just thought of something... we haven't had a chicago box on our courses in like almost a year...
last months auto-x, i only hit one cone... however, i didn't hit it... as i went past the 3rd cone in the slalom, my rear tire rolled over the base of it causing it to tip over...
that kept me from second in SM
which is no good, cuz i gonna defend my local SM championship from 2002.

I'm pretty clean usually and only hit the few ones in my way.
Not! I hit them all actually at one time or another, but what comes to mind are usually the apex cone and (yes it's true, even did it at the mazda rev it up) the outside cone as the car tracks out of a sweaper. cone != curb, cone != curb, cone != curb
Summary: I hit a lot of cones.

Either the middle or the end cone of a slalom, depending on what follows it.
I found that if there's a sharp corner after a slalom I'll get greedy on that last cone and hit it with my front.
I also have problems in some slaloms in keeping a pretty consistent speed for those evenly spaced ones. The increasing or decreasing speed slaloms don't seem to give me as many problems.
I just got to where I'm inches off the slalom cones, so it's taking me some self-discipline to not get greedy and clobber them.

Yeah I don't care which ones I hit, they all have a fair and equal opportunity of being flattened. Well except those in the start box, they are pretty safe.

We keep on joking around about making a "special" cone... on the outside, it'll look like a perfectly ordinary cone... On the inside however, it would be filled with CONCRETE!!! We would place this cone at a random point on the course... whoever hits it first, WINS!!! lol

I'm not hitting any, maybee that's why I got beat by a BONE STOCK '85 MR2.

I usually try and hit at least 5 or six on my third run. It is a challenge to get them into the air and have em land back in the box though.
I forgot more about hondas then you will ever know....

funny, i remember that as you hit 4-5 cones in EACH section of the course...
personally, i never hit the same type of cone. i am all over the map. guess i just suck at all the corners evenly, eh?

I'm a pretty clean autocrosser.
